I do think it is dumb when people ask for a tax form when they donate something to a place like goodwill. You’re willing to donate there, but don’t want the biggest charity in the world to get more money from you.

People donate to goodwill because they have stuff they don't want anymore, not because they want to give money to anyone.

contribution to this thread: When someone looks for every reason they can to bring up trump/politics. I am picturing Ker Jung Owo getting on a train and walking up to a fat guy and saying something like "hey you are plump. trump is plump. did you know trump only lowered taxes for the rich" and when he gets ignored by the big guy he walks over to someone appearing Latino to him and says something like "you are Latino. did you know i don't like trump because he wants to build a wall?". This continues until everyone within a mile radius falls asleep each night and that is when he comes to 2+2.

It is difficult to explain. I have enormous difficulties to throw stuff away, but donating is a lot easier, although we don't have here any tax return forms for donation of clothing.

Because it's wasteful for no reason, and most people get a good feeling from giving.

I find it hard to believe you don't really understand this.

Because a) someone else might have a use for it, b) a charity can make money, and c) garbage doesn't pile up in landfills?


This is assuming people don't donate their literal garbage. I've donated plenty, but do not donate things that don't work or clothes that are too ratty to be useful.

Let's not forget the fact that tables, chairs, sofas and other items don't fit in your garbage can that easily.

I donate because I might want to buy it again next time I shop Goodwill.

Don't know why I thought of this one, but:

When I put a large item out on the street early for trash pickup, and it doesn't get taken by some passerby before the garbage truck arrives.

To be fair, it doesn't happen often.

We have 'bulk trash' collection every quarter. Placement starts a week before pick-up. Mostly it's yard waste, old mattresses, broken furniture, etc. Anything worth keeping and a lot that isn't is picked thru well before the actual garbage trucks come by.

The city of Phoenix will even pick up old appliances outside of bulk trash collection, by appointment. We made an appointment with the city to pick up a washing machine. We put it out the evening before scheduled pickup, and it was gone in under an hour. I'm pretty sure it was the used appliance store that got it.

I don't know if this should piss me off or not...

We are allotted 2 oversized pick-ups for free per year by our waste management system. I cut down a tree and compiled it for pick up yesterday. When my wife called them today they told her they are overbooked for free picks until next year, but they have openings on the paid pick-ups. We paid the $30. I'm not that pissed off, for some reason.

you should have pinned few postits in the neighborhood that you offer wood for free. Someone with a fireplace would be very happy to free you from this wood.

But there is a Z in Ray Zee. Z is a great letter and underutilized. Just start spelling raspberry with a Z (Razberry) [or be extra hip and spell it Razzberry] and it will probably catch on. Be cool and hip. Similar to using upside down letters or backwards letters like in Russian, to show off your hipsterness. That will annoy some people to no end.

I'm not advocating throwing useful things away. I'm saying that giving people objects they need is equivalent to giving them money. So you're objection to the claim that a person shouldn't ask for a tax receipt doesn't make sense to me.
