Did you mean to say "When I was a boy" or one of a thousand other better ways to say "When I was young?" Admit it, this awkward yet still insufferably pretentious phrasing is just so it could fit with the beat of the song.

The lyrics are ok really, especially when you take into account Plant being a teenager when he wrote them.
I suspect your anti Brit rock feelings are more connected to annoyance that a bunch of wimpy Limeys took your hallowed rock n roll and improved it for you. So yes, fits this thread perfectly.
