Most large corporations have shifted to PTO instead of "sick days". Where your salary is prorated into a 40 hr work week and you start off with a bank of "hours" for both your sick and vacation leave that accumulates based on tenure. If you take off for a day, 8 hours comes out of your "bank". The norm for a lot of people is to try and take as few days as possible so when you finally leave your job, they have to pay you out the hours accumulated in your PTO bank. Now some companies have a cap on the hours you can accumulate so you end up having to take some days off or you lose them when they expire at the end of the year.

When I worked for Verizon, any form of earned time taken off by the sales force was eventually punished by giving you terrible shifts when you return from vacation. Things like "You're working every weekend this month with your off days being Tuesday and Thursday" or you being looked over as "not putting the company needs first" when it comes to discussion of the next promotion into management. A few companies I've worked for would conveniently have "blackout days/weeks/months" throughout the year where you couldn't take your vacation with zero tolerance and only "sick-leave" was permitted. Many customer facing in store sales type of companies will place blackout time between thanksgiving & the new year. Don't even think about taking some time off to spend the holidays with your family. You might not have a job for much longer when you come back.

Patron, amoeba:

Most people I know who have jobs with unlimited vacation policies at tech companies take a lot more time off than people with standard vacation policy jobs.

But it sucks for people who don’t like taking much time off and now no longer get paid out unused vacation time.

What does unlimited vacation mean? This is new to me. Is it paid vacation?

This makes sense, and if the company instituted an unlimited vacation policy so that they wouldn't have to pay out unused vacation time, then that should piss amoeba off.

Also, MBN to be paid handsomely at a tech company and take 5+ weeks off every year.

My sister and her fake husband are visiting. The fake husband likes Post Raisin Bran cereal but w/o the raisins and I have to sit there watching them pick them out. Ofc, I ask why don't they buy cereal w/o raisins, amirite? And I get told that the Post Raisin Bran flakes are the best but they don't want the sugar. Add that to the list of what my OCD sister does and it's a wonder I don't just kill myself.

Well, I did a lot of reading up before I ordered. And yes, my next question was if she went with the real human hair or the horse hair because I’m considering upgrading.

Johnny, I appreciate your commitment to the bit, even if I find the horse hair or real human hair stuff a bit disturbing.

Generally, yes. What it means is that the company doesn't keep track of how many hours of paid time off you've accrued. They're definitely keeping track of how much you use.

By not tracking accrued hours, they are effectively eliminating a liability from their books.

The more I find out about it, the more it seems like it should piss people off.

Seems like it's just a policy that companies use to pressure people to work more and get paid less. Does that sound about right?

Get five jobs with unlimited vacation and put in for 30 years of vacation at all of them. Checkmate.

Vacation has almost always been at your manager's discretion, infinite PTO just makes it more obvious, while at the same time being one less thing they have to track and pay you for. You've always been responsible for getting enough vacation, with infinite PTO it's just more obvious.
