I used to look at people in down vests and think they were just lying to themselves. Then I had to borrow one and doggonit it worked.
i took whitewater rafting trip one time, air temp wasn't bad but the water was very cold, mid to high 40's. we were spending an overnight, and stopped at like 4pm to camp and we went swimming. i was wearing a life jacket, like a vest style one that was pretty tight, no water could get under it. i swam around for probably 20 minutes, sure it was cold but i was relatively comfortable, not really bothered at all, could've kept swimming for a while. i took the vest off and was immediately freezing. night and day difference.
