Things that shouldn't piss you off, but do. Things that shouldn't piss you off, but do.

The words generally start becoming slurs once people starting using them to refer to people who don't have the condition.

I have never been able to understand the transition of "handicapped" and "disabled." It always seemed to me that "handicapped" implied a condition that needed extra effort to overcome and that "disabled" implied the inability to perform some function.

I'm ok with going along with the socially-accepted connotation of both, but it seems to me that they should be just the opposite of current thinking. I guess that's why I don't get to make the rules.

Darn, you shouldn't call a person disabled. You call them a person with a disability.

So, I am sort of correct that it is ok to say handicap parking. I never hear the term accessible parking. That is silly. Someone may think you mean quick access to where you are going. And disabled parking sounds wrong. At least today it does.

Never use the term “handicapped parking.” Use “accessible parking” instead.
Handicapped parking is still in use (e.g., when referring to parking placards), though the word “handicapped” is offensive and has been virtually eliminated in most other contexts. Remove it from your organization’s vocabulary completely by using the term “accessible parking.” (It’s also more accurate, as accessible describes the parking and handicapped does not.)

Words morph and we are in a period of phasing out handicap. I just wouldn't call a person handicapped and I worked at a medical office. We do "disability" paperwork to get a "handicap" placard. I don't call it a "disability" placard. I guess the difference is that you are referring to a space and not the actual person.
Uh, there is no such rule, sorry. I'll just go on using the perfectly serviceable word I've been using my whole life.

We change. You don't call Asian-Americans Orientals anymore. Somewhere in the 1980s. Personally, I would not call a person handicapped. I don't even try to overthink it. It is what it is.

The handicap placard is tough for me. They need to come up with a better term.

I work with handicapped people so perhaps I am a bit more sensitive than others.

I usually try to call people what they prefer since it is easy and has value to them and being attached to what was perfectly okay previously has no value to me and bothers them.

That was pretty funny. Tbh I don't think I have ever referred to someone as disabled/handicapped or whatever. It generally is X has a disability and needs wheelchair access or whatever. Just referring to someone in general conversation as being disabled seems a little like that is all that person is. Labelling and pigeon holing. I'm not sure I am doing a good job in explaining what I am trying to say.

Let's clear this up once and for all. Which is correct, "person with a disability" or "disabled person?"
Spoiler:
According to the National Center on Disability and Journalism "Disability Language Style Guide," ask the disabled person or disability organizational spokesperson about their preferred terminology. "Person with a disability" is known as people-first language. Those who prefer people-first language say it avoids defining a person in term of his or her disability. "Disabled person" is known as identity-first language. It is the preferred terminology in Great Britain and by a growing number of U.S. disability activists, and by people who consider their disabilities to be inseparable parts of who they are.

It takes a good 5 to 10 years to phase out words.

Some things are ridiculous. At least for olds like me.

Which is perfect for this thread.

Video game junkies who refer to themselves as e-athletes!!!

I once had a threesome with 2 female escorts. They kept changing my condom when switching back and forth. Pissed me the **** off.

It took 5 seconds for me to be reminded why I don't listen to the local sports talk radio shows. I heard the former Steelers WR called "San Antonio Holmes."

Click.

It pisses me off because I swore off this local talk radio show, but I tried going back. Serves me right for finishing my podcast early.

Sooooo pissed off by

sites that have a lot of blablabla through which you have to click through to actually get to the piece of information you want. Boy, I want to buy equipment worth close to 100 k from you. Make it easy for me.

The super ****ty public transportation in Frankfurt. Probably it could be considered fine in USA#1, but compared to Hamburg or Berlin or Moscow it is a piece of crap and makes me want to run amok.

The dude who is super clingy although we sooooooo don't fit. I mean...... How can I convey it to him, that I am not interested without becoming mean? I told that I have no time and won't have any in near future for any kind of a relationship. He is still clinging to me. I don't want to spend my time with him neither as a date no as a friend. What the heck is he hoping for? Grrrrrrrrr! What am I doing wrong? I really don't know what is worse: to feel unrequited love or to have someone falling for you, without feeling even the slightest sympathy for the sufferer.

Men don't understand "nice". You need to be direct.

lapka,

In addition to what Didace said, being direct isn't being mean. "We are not a good match and I'm not interested in dating you, sorry", direct and fine. "You are ugly and fat and smelly and you should go die in a sewer", mean and not fine.

Also little known fact:

Santonio Holmes was covered by Cedric Griffin from Texas in the UT/OSU game in 2005.
Cedric went to high school in San Antonio, at a school named Holmes. So Santonio Holmes was covered by a guy from San Antonio Holmes.
