That Nationwide commercial that goes like "All over, people are remembering drivers' ed. They're not talking or texting, they're looking left and right and left again, they're braking for squirrels...and then some."

wtf? Slamming on the brakes in your SUV with your three kids in the back seat because some squirrel makes a suicide dart is the exact opposite of responsible driving.

And apparently items included in the "...and then some" include humans, large wooden crates, and other cars. Way to go above and beyond, responsible Americans! Those kids cavalierly plowing through squirrels, crates, cars, chickens, cows, and surfboarders must have some pretty high deductibles by now.

The State Farm commercials with "Jerry" and that stupid receptionist are also bad. Every insurance commercial is awful.

"Jerry" drives his car into a building and declares "I'm also gonna need a stone mason", when the building was clearly made of some stucco/plaster/EIFS surface - not ****ing stone. It's like the 12 year old daughter of the CEO writes the commercials.

At least when you see a huge, ****ty campaign for an insurance company you use, you can smile and think about the fact that your premium helped pay for that.

I hate the noise some people make when they drink water. That "gulp". Only way to make it worse is some heavy breathing afterwards

That guys like Kevin Trudeau are allowed to run their blatant scams right there on our television. Especially when they are allowed to set up their scam infomercial to look like some fake news show.

He's talking about the tea pot. Americans have this same issue with corporate coffee pots. And people who make a 3/4 cut into a donut and eat the 3/4 part and leave the 1/4 part, as if someone will want it. This is usually done by a 375 pound Human Resource lady who is "on a diet".

That's not the annoying part in it itself, but it seems that she rings in a certain amount of items money wise, pays with this voucher or whatever. Then starts a separate transaction with more items that were on the belt. Pays for those with another voucher type thing. Rinse and repeat about 4 times, each time taking much longer than it should. Finally the last batch of groceries gets put through and she pulls out a $100 bill to cover those. I can't help but feel I'm somehow witnessing a scam that costs me money and I fill with rage.

Anyone have any idea what I'm saying?
maybe WIC, a government program for pregnant women, newborns/young children

they get a few checks each month that are for very specific items like formula, milk, cereal, peanut butter and have to be wrung up exactly as stated on the check or the store doesn't get paid back

it's a major headache to ring up and takes quite a long time

except in american offices there's indoor plumbing, so you don't have to go outside to dump a pot of coffee.

Is there anything (other than being English and thus inherently polite) to keep you from just grabbing the trolley and wheeling it back out of your way without even saying anything to the offending idiot?

The money doesn't disappear - it goes to a bunch of people who had their hand in making the car. Then trickles down to other people, and so on. Some of these people along the way may even donate some of that money to cancer research!

It's like they think money disappears once it's spent at the consumer level.

I understand that this use of money may not be optimally efficient for society (we may rather sooner divert money to research than to a car), but this isn't really the point they are making. The point they are making is that the money is gone forever, and they are wrong.
it pisses me off when people think they understand how currency works and think they're above people who say things like "that money could have been spent on cancer research!"

they don't understand a good chunk of the money effectively disappears into the pockets of a foreign rich guy, while the rest of it is wasted on the costs of building the car in the first place while destroying natural resources. a good chunk of the money is wasted on wages of workers who could be doing something productive for society rather than building a toy for some rich guy who doesn't get that finding a cure for cancer is more important than driving a million dollar car round. and then they think that because a few of these workers might do something worthwhile with a tiny fraction of the money they earn, that the money "is not wasted" and that the luxury million dollar toy industry is actually beneficial to society.

and then they have the nerve to claim that the people who point this out think "that the money is gone forever" and have zero understanding of currency, when their own understanding of economics in general is awfully superficial.

Yeh, I don't get how anyone who watches even a little bit of TV can have GEICO insurance (I suppose, though, that almost everyone who has GEICO watches at least a little bit of TV). How many different ad campaigns do they have now? The gecko, the pig, the caveman, the 2 singing guys, the guy made of money. Just about every stadium or arena has a GEICO sign somewhere in it. Ya think you might get a bit of the shaft when you try and make a claim?

Oh so you didn't read my last paragraph? Cool.

By the way you sound MAD.

I take it you spend 100% of your disposable income on cancer research? No? Cool.

If society's sole purpose was to cure cancer then time and natural resources are definitely wasted, I'll grant you that.

Also, why do you think "foreign rich guys" don't want to cure cancer? Does cancer only affect local, non-rich guys? Torontonians are the only ones who get cancer and care about finding a cure?

nah, just pointing out that you're at least as ******ed as the people you're ripping on. i'm totally fine with spending money on million dollar cars, i just think it's hilarious when people justify it with awfully misguided ideas about money and economics.

When the hell did "in my eyes" become the new "in my opinion", and why do people not realise it's equally pointless most of the time? Seems like that phrase is all over the place and it makes me want to slap everyone who uses it.
