It was an experiment of big data analysis. What it proved was that just knowing your purchases on your credit card was enough to identify you by cross referencing all of Facebook and the places and events you post about. The point was not that there was a use for that exact scenario, that there is someone who will start with a list of your cc purchases then try to figure out your name. Yes that would be stupid. You are the first person I have encountered who voiced they thought that was the point, though. I honestly don't know what to tell you if the other possibilities that are implied by this kind of big data analysis are not interesting or disturbing to you.
