That is not the point. The point is it is possible to identify a person by their purchases cross referenced with all of the public posts on Facebook. If you think this is the only specific end use for this kind of analysis...well it is actually irrelevant because the limits of your imagination are not the limits of human imagination.

The end use isn't the issue, the stupid part is your starting point. How are you possibly getting someone's purchase history without already knowing their name?

It was an experiment of big data analysis. What it proved was that just knowing your purchases on your credit card was enough to identify you by cross referencing all of Facebook and the places and events you post about. The point was not that there was a use for that exact scenario, that there is someone who will start with a list of your cc purchases then try to figure out your name. Yes that would be stupid. You are the first person I have encountered who voiced they thought that was the point, though. I honestly don't know what to tell you if the other possibilities that are implied by this kind of big data analysis are not interesting or disturbing to you.

The point isn't cc and FB, the point is given enough anonymized data it can be de-anonymized which means privacy isn't going to be much of a thing for very much longer.

Everything is just a little different over there. One of my favorites was a sign I used to see every time I flew to Manchester. There was a car wash that was apparently very proud of the fact that they washed cars by hand, without the use of mechanization. A very large sign proudly proclaimed BEST HAND JOB IN TOWN.
