that will work lovely on rural roads, but bring it to big cities and every other uber or yellow cab will be bumping into it.

Sup with it stopping at 0:54? Wonder what it does with a car behind it there.

Roman numerals for the Super Bowl.

Yeah it's fine when it is SB III, but SB LI is ridiculous. They smartly got rid of them for SB 50 only to bring them back. Spare us the history lesson on ancient numeral systems for a ****ing football game.

I wondered what happened there, I knew they said the letters were out. Letters that think they are numbers, that pisses me off

People have a massive misunderstanding of how fast the software for self-driving cars is improving. The reason autonomous cars won't be mainstream in 5-10 years isn't technical at all. ****, they're pretty much ALREADY better than human drivers. The reason is (going to be) political. When it becomes obvious that truck drivers are about to be en masse unemployed, politicians will step in and slam the brakes.

Young people doing this is 100x worse, especially when it's their Levis, with a black belt.

Does the software already account for bad road conditions - such as bad weather?

This is huge. Plus the weird way people are, where if traffic deaths in a year went from 15k to 250, you would still have people resisting, saying I AIN'T GONNA BE ONE OF THE PEOPLE MURDERED BY THE SELF DRIVING CARS. Same as you have people not wearing seat belts because they read of one guy who got trapped in a burning car and dies, and just ignore the 1000s of people alive solely because of seatbelts.

Isn't part of the "political" problem of autonomus cars due to some unresolved questions that resemble the old Special Sklansky forum questions - such as, given a car is going to crash (and assuming it can identify all of the relevant variables), is it better to crash into a car containing x five-year olds and y sixty-year olds or crash into a car containing z five-year olds and t sixty-year olds...

Pocket,

Yes.

That's a major consideration, as companies/programmers need to make decisions on what exactly to program into the software. And as BA correctly points out, most people/users/consumers are not very rational about the way they evaluate things having to do with statistics and economic costs.

Pocket, Yes.

The category of problems you refer to are called Trolley Problems. There are a series of them - Google away and you can find information about them.

Also, the inevitable backlash from the inevitable acident will be insurmountable if the public isn't yet warmed to the idea, no matter how much safer it is compared to humans.

I enjoy driving.

Why the hell would I let a bot drive? So I can sit there bored out of my skull so I can grab the wheel when something ultimately goes wrong?

No thank you.

pvn is right obv, it won't be the software that stops us from autonomous driving. A part of it will definitely be that humans will not want any of it for a long time and will need to adjust. Also new government policies will need to be introduced in large parts of the worlds, implementing policy can take quite some time for several reasons of which one definitely will be the jobs factor. Supported/assisted driving technology will be way more prevalent before autonomous driving will be a thing, especially when it comes to commercial driving (trucks etc). /derail
