It's not common here anymore. If people work from home they usually call it an office. If they have a room for relaxing it is usually full of electronics, a tv and sports memorabilia and called a "man cave". Back in the days when Americans read books and actual knowledge was coveted more than a winning a fantasy football league I think they did call a room dedicated to retreat for adult men a study.

I'm going to start calling my home office and my office at work my study because I know it will tilt some specific people.

Full disclosure; I just started reading books again at night after realizing I'm an ignorant idiot and getting worse by arguing with other ignorant idiots online and in person in all my free time. Telling some of the idiots I spent the evening reading in my study in my next argument will be super satisfying.

When people call a college/university with high academic standards an Ivy League school when they aren't in the Ivy League.

I think the man-cave used to be called the "den" in the good ole days. Worse than the fakers who call their home office a study are the fakers who pretend to be confused when you refer to their home office as their office. They might say something like, "Oh, you mean my STUDY; my office is at work." GFYS
