The ones on the left are the normal sized carts. The ones on the right are smaller versions.

If you're picking up a few items and something bulky or heavy that wouldn't be comfortable to carry in the basket, but don't need the large bulk cart, these are ideal.

Now I'm confused. What if I want to buy just one regular cart sized item?

What happens if there are too many small or large carts to fit within that cart bay aisle - what do you do then?

Sit down before you hurt yourself. Ready to be blown away? Small items...can go in a big cart! I know it sounds crazy but hear me out. If you use a cart, you don’t have to fill it up! Crazy, right???

That’s not accurate. They’re designed to maneuver through stores better.

If you have lots of stuff to buy just use two small carts.

But was this really a big problem before? I’m trying to figure out why grocery stores would spend money on a whole new set of different sized carts. I’m actually guessing they researched it and found people made more impulsive purchases using the small cart than the hand baskets. Reduced weight and a little more room makes people more inclined to get more since “I’m already at the store, what else should I get” if they just ran in to get a few things. It’s all a tool to get people to spend more.

Fatties don't maneuver though

Reduced size is more ideal for the modernization that is self-checkout.

Both in terms of purchases (more than baskets, less than the burden that large carts bring) as well as the efficiency of space next to one another.

Large carts are terrible unless you're feeding a family of four for a month. Might as well drive your kid to school in a semi. If there aren't any small carts available, I just come back another time.

The discussion of large carts reminds me of childhood trips to the commissary (I was a Navy brat) with my mother for grocery shopping. She would fill 5 shopping carts (they only had one size back in the stone age): 40 half gallons of milk and 20 loaves of bread on every trip.

Why did I go? Because I got to fill a cart with cereal...of my choice. Next to Saturday morning cartoons, it was one of the great joys of childhood.

Sorry for the tangent...not really on point for the thread, I know.

(btw, I love the small carts...a great innovation we couldn't even dream of back then)

40 half gallons, but the answer is that the milk and bread all went into the garage freezer. Every night, two cartons of milk (one gallon) would be taken from the freezer and placed in the kitchen sink to thaw overnight. A very important step the next morning was to pour the milk into another container, or at least shake up the cartons, because the milk would separate from the freezing process.

I will never drink milk that has been frozen. It might be irrational, but that's how I do it.

Was there any particular reason why she did such massive shopping trips instead of just going shopping more often?
