de cap,

I don't believe that is true. (The pedestrian needing to be completely out of the street part, not the fool part.)

Dids,

Pedestrian crossing 50 state summary

The law varies depending on state but it's more true than untrue. If a cop sees you turning into that left lane while there's a pedestrian walking in the middle of the right lane you should get a ticket.

That is not how I read the summary you posted.

Quote:
- In any portion of the roadway
Minnesota
- Upon roadway / within one lane the vehicle is traveling
DC, Georgia, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey (only marked crosswalks), Oregon
= Upon the same half of the roadway / approaching from the other side to constitute danger
Hawaii, Illinois, Washington
Everywhere else is just various forms of must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.

If you turn into the left lane after stopping and yielding the right-of-way but before the pedestrian clears the street in the right lane as depicted in the paint, that should be ticketable in only 9 states and DC, according to that link.

What I thought was unnecessary was a full 180 degree turn to add emphasis while giving the finger. But he actually zoomed in there so fast(to end up sitting at the red left turn arrow a couple hundred feet ahead anyway) that it didn't slow me down at all.
UGH. you do not get to turn left at the same time as someone turning right

1. pedestrian finishes crossing

2. car turns right

3. you turn left

didnt read any other posts but will assume they all say this. good mspaint tho

Nineteen states require a motorist to yield when a pedestrian is upon any portion of the roadway. Nebraska requires yielding when a pedestrian is upon the same half of the roadway or within one lane of the motorist. Massachusetts mandates yielding when a pedestrian is upon the same half of the roadway or within 10 feet of the motorist; and 20 states mandate motorists yield when a pedestrian is upon the same half of the roadway or approaching closely enough from the opposite side of the roadway to constitute a danger.
Yielding in this circumstance doesn't mean you get to turn into the left lane while just missing their ass with your bumper. It means you have to wait for them to leave your 1/2 of the roadway.

Not sure how you get that interpretation. I did not see yield defined as "make sure they are not within half a roadway" in that link.

I suspect that "safe distance" is defined differently in different states, or even not defined at all and left as a judgement call. I agree that "just missing their ass with your bumper" probably does not qualify.

That was the 5th paragraph in the link I provided. How else would you define it when it says "yield when a pedestrian is upon the same 1/2 of the roadway"?

If you spend 2 minutes googling on the topic you'll find plenty of discussion about people receiving citations for this nationwide.

I would define it as "if they are in the same half of the roadway, you must give them the right-of-way." I find that "failure to yield" is usually a judgement call, and that traffic judges will almost always defer to the ticketing officer as to what amount of clearance is required to consider it a proper yield.

I mention this because I got such a ticket in California once, and challenged it. I don't know how well my argument would have played out (I suspect poorly, based on what else I saw in the traffic court that day), but since the ticketing officer didn't have any notes and didn't remember any details, it got thrown out.

"When official traffic-control devices are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be so to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the highway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the highway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the highway as to be in danger."

We're more sporting in Nevada - once they're out of your half of the road you can apparently try to slap their ass as you blow by them.

This is why I love NYC. The unwritten agreement between cars and pedestrians is basically "do whatever you want, just don't hit me." Works pretty well in my experience.

Ricky Gervais. I actually enjoyed Extras when it first came out. Now he is probably the most obnoxious celebrity around.

When you say goodbye to someone and then they leave at the same time walking the same exact direction as you to their car, so you either have to walk in awkward silence, or chat a bit and then say bye again.

Similarly, when you walk to the end of a road meeting another road at the perpendicular, and arrive at the same place as another pedestrian walking at the same speed and in the same direction as you.

Quit walking so slow and you won't have this problem. The average fit person dawdles around like life goes on forever. Pick up your feet!

Yeah it desn't happen often for that reason but when it does it pisses me off because I have a choice between maintaining my natural walking speed which is quite fast but means walking almost side by side with a total stranger which is just...weird... , or slowing down to an unnatural pace to fall behind them.

Just rub shoulders with the stranger while making strong eye contact and they should be the one to slow down first like 90+% of the time. Maybe give them a quick wink.
