Driving a super cheap used/old car will crush your soul. You don't even appreciate the damage it does to you until you're driving a better one.

You can get a reliable car with working AC for less than 5k easily. Spending more on cars that go fast/look nice/convert into boats etc is cool if you have the money, but totally not worth it if you dont. If you're spending 15%+ of your net income on a car payment youre a fool.

I don't understand the people who say they skimp on food and clothes. While paying hundreds of dollars for a plain white T by Kanye West is stupid, there's a world of difference between Wal-Mart clothes and even a middle-brow brand like Express. And the difference between Folgers and some gormet coffee is night and day.

I'm at half of that, so 8 still seems high

You'd be surprised at the number of people who buys cars that cost like 90% of their yearly income.

You would have to include parents income as well tho.

Haha, 8 isn't high at all. You're either a BALLA or you have a pretty cheap car.

I said super-cheap, super old -- think less than $2500, you little child of privilege, you.

Well my monthly payment is actually 4.5% of my monthly income but I have virtually no interest so that might have something to do with it. Interest rates can really inflate a car payment. Btw I don't have a cheap car and I don't consider myself a balla

Ditto desk chair, especially if you're in it for eight hours or more a day. My company thinks the 5'2" woman and the 6'8" ex-basketballer should work out of the same chair. I bought my own.

Not so much on cars, in the sense that a good deal of money is spent on cache rather than features and reliability -- likewise excess performance (HP) unless you're into taking it to the track.

This may be obvious, but if you're serious about a sport the best equipment is well worth the extra cost -- I play competitive tennis and pay up for the best string (Luxilon Big Banger Alu is my current favorite).

High end sheets, including polartec (if you are in snow belt) worth every penny. Good feather pillows as well.

I'm also a big fan of top-rated winter tires -- huge + value for peace of mind and safety.

Regular dental care.

Tools, lawn equipment (e.g. Fiskars). Good stuff can be multi-generational.

Exterior and interior paint. Don't go by price or painter recommendations -- look at test results.

If you practice good oral hygiene just how necessary are regular dental appointments? Is it a racket like needing a prescription for glasses?

I don't shop at the dollar store, but Target brand trash bags and sandwich bags are equal to name brands.

When comparing name brands to store brands I look at the fine print, e.g. ingredients and/or composition and if identical, I purchase the store brand if cheaper. This works for things like medication as well.

Toilet paper, agreed that cheap is bad.

Pillows. I bought a sleep number pillow last year and while it seemed expensive it was worth every penny. Completely changed my sleeping for the better.

Windows. Spend the extra to get windows that will last a long time, won't warp or rot, and are functional/efficient. A good window can completely change your living experience in your home.

9/10 of my good friends that just graduated and are working jobs paying <$30k yearly just bought cars in the $20-$35k range. Mind blowing. I still have an 11 year old BMW that's nicer than these new/like new cars that they've all purchased.

I always buy used cars and will never buy new. That being said you don't really think your 11yr old car is better than their brand new vehicles?

Life jackets for babies and children. . I used to work at a marine supply store and you'd be amazed how little people value their own children.

What does a high end children's life preserver offer that a cheap one does not? You did not explain this.

I was always told to make sure to spend for quality when it comes to anything that puts you in direct contact with the ground, e.g. tires, beds/mattresses, footwear, chairs/couches, etc.
