Targeted advertising is a reality of course, but I don't mind it. Seems a fair tradeoff for all the internet, and general connectivity, offers. Thing is, these days, I'm finding it really easy to completely dodge phone/computer/tv advertising, which is why targeted ads don't bother me. I mean, I literally haven't seen a TV commerical in a long long time, and as for computer and phone ads (IG, fb, twitter, etc) they are just a gray area on my screen to not notice. I'm really good at blocking out ads.

What actually happens when you click on an ad? Never tried it. I don't even see the ads frankly, they're just white noise to me.

Why again do you have a FB? To keep in contact with ONE person? Come on Howard.

On the serious note...... Be conscious about what can happen with your data. I don't hate this advertising, but am very aware of what else can be done with my data and try to weigh off advantages of putting something out against possible disaster.

One of these days I'm going to delete the FB account. As far as security goes I'm pretty good. If it looks suspicious I don't do it and shred all of my mail that might help an identity thief.

howard, 2p2 doesn't need to sell your info. Most sites can glean your info from your cookies. your browser tracks everywhere you go. And even if you take measures against that, and do everything with VPN, your ISP knows about all of your activity.

In reality, you probably have absolutely nothing to worry about unless you're doing something illegal. And even then, probably not much to worry about.

The real thing to be concerned about is the elimination of net neutrality but most people couldn't even tell you what that is.

Hopefully, youtube-ing 'Japanese Cosplay' isn't illegal.

This is pretty old now, and maybe it's all well known at this point, but the NYT piece on Target's use of big data a few years back was pretty eye-opening.

Look at the bright side, you will probably get notices on all the new Asian massage parlor openings.

There used to be a hoe mongers forum where people discussed such things. A <cough> friend told me about it.
