As of the time I am posting this, 4 out of 12 Thai boys have already been rescued from the cave. There are 8 kids left plus adults.

This story has captured the attention of the whole world. Here's to hoping that everybody comes out alive and healthy.

4 more coming up. Looks like the rescuers moved very quickly up the learning curve of how to do it. Looks like a slam dunk. Good game, rescuers. Almost no possibility of a disaster, which is a very very good thing. No sweating required.

These rescue divers have great big ****ing balls. Many props go out to all of them for the job they are doing

Everyone out now apparently.

Well done to all those involved, particularly the divers.

So all the kids are alive and was it 1 diver that died? I've gotten info 2nd hand so it may be wrong about the diver.

Yeah one of the divers died. Can someone explain how they got themselves so far into the cave? Some parts of the cave is only 15 inches wide seems ridiculously stupid to want to be there?

O/U on this coach getting a beat down from one of the player's relatives? I don't know much about Thai culture, but he's not going to regarded positively is he?

Someone on Twitter said something to the effect of the coach being a complete idiot for getting his boys into that situation, but then the fact that he was able to keep them alive for 9 days before rescuers found them is quite remarkable. He apparently was teaching the boys how to meditate and keep them calm throughout.

As for how they got that deep, I'm not sure but the flooding may have begun after they entered the cave and they could've been forced deeper into the cave to get away from it. Anyone who's been to SE Asia will know how ridiculous flooding can be during monsoon season. It can go from sunny to pouring buckets of water in an instant.

He might well - he kept them alive until rescue came, was last out and it was being reported that he refused all food and was in poor condition so that his students could eat what little was available.

They went into the cave, the rain started, they got stuck, were forced to retreat deeper into the cave where it wasn't flooded.

something along the lines of..

Quote:
Reinhold Messner was the first man to climb Mt. Everest without the use of compressed oxygen. When he was interviewed by a reporter, he was asked…”Why did you go up there knowing you could have died? Why did you go up there to die?” He responded…

“I didn’t go up there to die. I went up there to live.”
apparently they were going to celebrate two of the kids birthdays down there. There is an area in the cave known as Pattaya Beach, where there is sand.

he was orphaned as a child and grew up in the monkhood and gave the kids all his food and water. dumb mistake.

Apparently they were so far into it and then the cave started flooding because monsoon season is what I heard or just lots of rain, I'm not clear on that. They had to just keep on going deeper to stay out of the water. From what I remember it was impossible to get out of the entrance as everything turned to mud and lots of water was coming in so their only option was to stay put or go deeper.

On another forum I'm on a poster said he's been in caves of that area and it's a huge tourist attraction so it seems pretty common and this was a freak occurrence by what I assume is flash flooding.

From before the rescue started

Thats awesome of the parents. Yeah it was a stupid mistake but he was only 25, nearly a kid himself. I'm sure he'll be living with horrible shame and guilt for the rest of his life, no reason to beat him down any further. After he got them in that position he was pretty much a hero.

Poor Injun Joe. What a horrible death.

Quote:
Injun Joe's bowie–knife lay close by, its blade broken in two. The great foundation–beam of the door had been chipped and hacked through, with tedious labor; useless labor, too, it was, for the native rock formed a sill outside it, and upon that stubborn material the knife had wrought no effect; the only damage done was to the knife itself. But if there had been no stony obstruction there the labor would have been useless still, for if the beam had been wholly cut away Injun Joe could not have squeezed his body under the door, and he knew it. So he had only hacked that place in order to be doing something—in order to pass the weary time—in order to employ his tortured faculties.

Ordinarily one could find half a dozen bits of candle stuck around in the crevices of this vestibule, left there by tourists; but there were none now. The prisoner had searched them out and eaten them. He had also contrived to catch a few bats, and these, also, he had eaten, leaving only their claws. The poor unfortunate had starved to death. In one place, near at hand, a stalagmite had been slowly growing up from the ground for ages, builded by the water–drip from a stalactite overhead. The captive had broken off the stalagmite, and upon the stump had placed a stone, wherein he had scooped a shallow hollow to catch the precious drop that fell once in every three minutes with the dreary regularity of a clock–tick—a dessertspoonful once in four and twenty hours.

That drop was falling when the Pyramids were new; when Troy fell; when the foundations of Rome were laid when Christ was crucified; when the Conqueror created the British empire; when Columbus sailed; when the massacre at Lexington was "news." It is falling now; it will still be falling when all these things shall have sunk down the afternoon of history, and the twilight of tradition, and been swallowed up in the thick night of oblivion. Has everything a purpose and a mission? Did this drop fall patiently during five thousand years to be ready for this flitting human insect's need? and has it another important object to accomplish ten thousand years to come? No matter. It is many and many a year since the hapless half–breed scooped out the stone to catch the priceless drops, but to this day the tourist stares longest at that pathetic stone and that slow–dropping water when he comes to see the wonders of McDougal's cave. Injun Joe's cup stands first in the list of the cavern's marvels; even "Aladdin's Palace" cannot rival it.
That "and he knew it" sent a chill down 5-year old JTM spine when my dad read it to me.

A little but let's not laugh too hard. Egomaniac or not, he was trying to help.

Look at the range of things that could have happened - if they had lost a diver or a kid from the first group of 4 (a distinct possibility), the operation would probably have been halted and Musk's submarine might have come in handy.

A submarine is an interesting idea. Musk is awesome.

Anyone know how the water gets into the cave - from the front entrance somehow and down the path the hikers went, or did it come in through crevices/cracks in the top of the cave?

Probably seeps. That's how caves are.

Hopefully the movies that are made about this are done well. I imagine screenplays are being written as we type.

What a monster for engineering and flying a mini-submarine to the scene. Which he claims would have worked “Moreover, based on extensive cave video review and discussion with several divers who know journey, SpaceX engineering is absolutely certain that mini-sub can do entire journey & demonstrate at any time,” Musk added.
