I'm going to post sushi pics from my Japan trip

most of the above is train station or mall sushi, which I found to be excellent.
Yeti recommends a quail egg on top of anything whenever you can get one.

for LFS, shrimp head (i didn't eat it)

bacon sushi

now the best sushi I've seen, from tsukiji
my friend Phil had this, (there were a couple other items involved including tamago

I got the tuna lovers, so good at 7am with a Kirin

If I'm still hungry, I get a Ika Shiso roll and finally finish with an order of tamago.

If its cold out, I'll have a bowl of miso soup afterwards. I don't understand how people enjoy miso soup before eating sushi.

My dream sushi destination in the US is Urasawa. Has anybody been?

My dream sushi destination abroad is probably some place like Mizutani.

A little off topic but if I had the ingredients right now, I would make myself some soft scrambled eggs and top it with hairy crab roe, uni, and osetra caviar.
Urasawa is the greatest. I've been there at least a dozen times (sick brag). The only problem is that it keeps getting more expensive. But out of the top 10 meals of my life, at least 8 have been at Urasawa.

As an aside, when I see people struggling with chop sticks in a Sushi restaurant, I love telling them its ok, and arguably preferred by both chef and diner, to eat it with your hands.

This is good to know, Im decent with chop sticks but the 6-10 times Ive had sushi Ive had some trouble with certain rolls.

Do you eat sashimi or nigiri with hands?

Do you have to eat big rolls in one bite? Some are small and easy to eat but some are hooge and tough to fit in my mouth.

Has anyone found good sushi in the Boston area?

Oiishi in Chestnut Hill is supposed to be the best around, and I agree it is very good but the seating situation is just horrible on a weekend night. The Oiishi in the south end is simply a ripoff in terms of the amount of fish you get for the Chestnut Hill prices.

Douzo is not bad but too much of a scene. Not a fan of Haru.

I had some good fish at the place in the Eliot Hotel at Comm & Mass Ave, but they were trying a little too hard to be inventive IIRC.

Thanks. I've got a couple coworkers who have been there. They say it was a good one time experience but probably would not go back.

Yeah exactly. you can also eat nigiri with chopsticks but its a faux pas to eat sashimi with your hands. rolls you can do either hands or chopsticks.

With regards to the chef, at more traditional and high end places, the sushi chef will actually notice whether you are eating nigiri with your hands or chopsticks and correspondingly pack the rice ball looser (hands) or tighter (chopsticks) because they don't want the nigiri falling apart before hitting your mouth. Since ideal nigiri will have the rice ball kind of fall apart once it hits your mouth, its another reason to eat nigiri with your hands.

Mr. Pi's in Metuchen is great and not too expensive at all. Then in New Brunswick is Hotoke which seems like a ripoff of Tao and while the sushi is pretty good, the rest of the menu is amazing.

If you're ever in Chicago try Dib. It's a block from my place and the sushi is awesome. There's a lot of good places around here of course but Dib is one of the nicest and most affordable.
