I know OOT has many sushi lovers, so let's talk about what we like and don't like, where we go, what we spend, etc.

I live in Los Angeles, home to hundreds of sushi places. My wife and my favorite sushi place is Sushi Go 55, an old-school place on the fourth floor of a mall in Little Tokyo. We go there often, and have gone as often as 2-3 times a week, so we're greeted like old friends which I really enjoy at a restaurant. They gave us a baby gift when my son was born and post pictures of my kids if I bring them.

When I say it's "old school", I mean it's not hip and doesn't have lots of crazy drinks and rolls. Trivia note: it's called Sushi Go 55 because the owners are friends with Hideki Matsui, the Japanese slugger called "Godzilla" in Japan who now plays for the New York Yankees. He wears #55. Despite this I still like them a lot.

Standard order:

To start: sweet live shrimp. This is two dishes in one. The freshly killed shrimp bodies are brought as sushi with a healthy layer of wasabi. A few minutes later you'll get the shrimp heads, either deep-fried or in soup. Deep-fried is clearly, clearly, superior imo.

The sushi:

The head:

Then our main order.

Scallop sushi (not sure if it's standard, but Sushi Go 55 puts some mint underneath the scallop, makes it taste even more like the sea, in a good way):

Albacore sushi:

Aji (spanish mackeral) sushi:

Salmon (salmon is often the most boring sushi in my experience, at Sushi Go 55 it's fresh, thick, and buttery, probably my favorite fish here):

Yellowtail:

Then, my wife and I diverge for our final order (unless we're already too full). I usually go with a spicy tuna handroll (unless the salmon or yellowtail was especially incredible in which case I'll just get more of that):

The wife gets unagi (eel):

That's our standard order, but I'll get something different occasionally when they tell us it's especially good or fresh. Sometimes I don't want a ton of rice to I'll do everything as sashimi. It's difficult to get out of there for less than $100 for two without alcohol, which is pretty standard in my experience for good sushi.

That's what I like. The only fish I actively dislike is octopus. I don't like the taste or the texture.

What do you like or dislike? Other sushi thoughts?

You just pop that bad-boy in your mouth and eat the whole thing, at least when it's deep-fried.

I love Uni, Toro, Unagi. There are 4 sushi restaurants in my town. About 75% of the time they do not have Toro.

Once again, I live and die by Sushi Yasuda in NYC. Like LFS' contribution, very old school and simple. Just unbelievable fresh fish. I recommend anyone who comes to NYC and enjoys sushi to blow $200 and get the omakase with Yasuda himself.

Wife likes the eel, too.

She said that!

The only sushi I've ever tried and really liked was California Roll, and I'm half asian.

But maybe I should just try different types of sushi.

I'm a big fan of the dragon roll:

In general, I'm a boring roll guy. My normal sushi order is very bland probably compared to most people's.

1 California Roll
1 Spicy Tuna Roll
1 Dragon Roll
1 "other" special roll, normally whatever is a house special.

i like sushi a lot but dont eat it too often when in kentucky half the year

have it pretty often in vegas at nobu, okada, naked fish, yellowtail, etc

just got back from london where we had some nice nobu dinners since it was right across the street

our standard nobu dinner typically consists of:

-creamy spicy rock shrimp
-miso cod
-miso cod in lettuce cups
-yellowtail jalapeno sashimi
-spicy scallop dish thing

everyone usually orders whatever random sushi they feel like, but i typically like pretty basic stuff so i usually go with:

-plain tuna roll
-salmon and cucumber roll
-spider roll (soft shell crab)
-salmon nigiri
-shrimp tempura roll
-sometimes toro but im not a big fan and usually just have one piece

also usually eat a bunch of kobe beef, and just have them bring us out a bunch prepared a couple diff ways. i am partial to the hot rocks where you grill it to your liking at the table, but everyone usually loves the kobe 'new style' which is kind of raw and peppery

our last dinner for 4 people at nobu was about $750, but we had drank a decent amount of sake and drinks

sushi dinner prices are always a function of how much beef gets ordered and what type and how much the alcohol is

*edit* throwing out a recommendation for the 'tuna pizza' at yellowtail at the bellagio, since this thread has me craving one right now

There are a few places in NYC that offer $30 all you can eat sushi and saki bombs. A bunch of friends and I went to one a few Fridays ago, and certainly got our money's worth.

I ordered a few rolls, including my favorite, a dragon roll. It's shrimp, tobiko, eel, cucumber, and avocado:

27,

ya we flip for it. lately with heads-up sniff the peanut tourneys, which is just one person putting a bit of napkin (or a peanut if possible) in one hand and the other person has to guess it, and winner is immune until a final match is played between losers to decide who pays

i did the run good in london and dodged every meal (due to superior smell the peanut skills obv) and i think ran kind of decent this summer in vegas, but i would have to think i am down slightly lifetime in equity since i got hit with a couple really big ones, including the most expensive 5 person meal of my life

Also, anyone in the NYC area, I highly recommend Sushi Samba 7. It's half sushi, half brazilian steakhouse, which sounds like a strange combination. They have this yellowtail seviche that's unbelievable.

Love sushi. Probably my food of choice. After years of eating it and experimenting with different things, I find it hard to order a roll, ever.

There is just so much going to waste when sashimi/nigiri is not ordered.

and for OP, have you been to Sasabune in LA...used to be in little Tokyo, now is on Wiltshire and 5th I believe. Best sushi hands down.

And Uni (Sea Urchin) is probably the best of the bunch, you have to make sure you get a really fresh order, if not it will taste like warm sea water, but if you get a good one, it is so sweet and delicious.

the best sushi i ate in recent times was at ino sushi in san francisco.

diablo talks about it here, and here are a few photos.

the ankimo (monkfish liver) was the most incredible mouthful i've ever had. just phenomenal.

Sounds more like a peruvian tapas place...that also served steak.

Hmmm, I have not, but will try it. I'm a pretty hard-core Sushi Go 55 devotee, obviously, so I'm loathe to go other places. Also everybody swore that Sushi Gen was the best sushi in LA and I was disappointed. It wasn't bad, but I waited an hour and it was NOT better than Sushi Go, and nobody was treating me like a king, so I won't be back.

Eel is freaking great, I love the consistency of it

The best sushi dish I've had is at Blue Fish in Dallas: The Ahi Tower

Not the greatest image, but it's Avocado, Ahi Tuna, Botan Rice, Crab Meat, Fish Eggs and Tobiko with an amazing sauce of some sort. So so good. My wife ordered it in the post-pardem room the day of our son's birth she missed it so much.
