Ive been suicidal before. Its not fun. How do you know im being disingenuous? Someone asked about how it affects mental health, so i didnt derail anything. Go f yourself for calling me a troll when I seem to be the only one who thinks she should proactively book a therapist

I think that the trolling rate is in this thread about zero. There is certain rate of not really knowing how Jo feels and what is actually the right thing to say. I am certainly one of those people. But Jo seems to be cool enough about that. And I personally find it super cool that she can see things from a perspective of both sexes. Next time I don't understand men I am going to ask her.

there is something wrong about warning someone that they might be in a high suicidal group? really? what is wrong with it?

I didn't take preki's comments as anything other than highlighting the trans suicide rate.

Yeah, it's pretty awful and it sucks. I'm friends with a lot of trans women through social media, and it happens too regularly that a page becomes a memorial page. But these suicide rates are pre-transition. Once we transition, our suicide rate drops to 4%, which is only a little higher than the general population.

A lot of people identify as non-binary these days, and to be honest, that just seems to suck. I can't really relate to NBs, and there doesn't seem any 'relief' for them, because there is no transition, so I think their suicide rate remains high.

As an aside, trans women generally really like the binary. I took a cis friend to a trans club once. She was convinced the men I dated were "secretly gay". Within 5 minutes she turned to me and said, "This is the straightest place I've ever been". I knew what she meant. Trans women are often almost hyper-feminine, and the men that like trans women tend to be very masculine - or maybe we tend to like very masculine men.

Here's an update as I'm 5 days away:

A doctor phoned me a couple of weeks ago and told me the things I needed to do to prep for surgery. I don't think he had much experience with the trans community. He very breezily told me that I needed to come off estrogen for two weeks prior to surgery, because it is a risk factor for blood clots. He has no idea the sheer panic that being told to come off hormones induces. So I haven't complied with this yet. For the last week, I've been tapering down, and I plan to be hormone free from Friday onwards. Its the best I could do - balancing my mental health against the surgical risk.

I'm also supposed to be a non-smoker. I only smoke one a day, but I'm planning on stopping completely from yesterday onwards, at least until post-surgery. The stress has also been making me drink more, so from today on, I'm also going alcohol free. This weekend will just be a case of gritting my teeth and getting through it

Congrats jo and best wishes going forward.
I'm not familiar with either poster, but I wouldn't diminish preki's advice or assume jo is not ready for it. We all wish her the best BECAUSE of course it won't be easy. This is how she finds out where her real support comes from.

EDIT: nice to see the follow-ups now...

jo,

Not following a doctor's pre-surgery requirements is lolbad, and not mentioning it to the doctor or discussing your specific situation is lolololbad. What are you thinking?

Gotta agree with the sentiment of 27 here. To keep taking a medication before major surgery that doctors are explicitly telling you to stop taking before major surgery.. I don't know what to say about that.

At the very least, you have to tell the doctors so they know about it.

Well, you know, as my posts last month demonstrate, I'm not the kind of girl that makes lolgood decisions.

I couldn't face two weeks without estrogen, but if I told them that and they said I couldn't have the surgery, which of course they're gonna say, I couldn't face that either. Anyway, I took off the final two patches after reading this.

Let anaesthesiologist know when you stopped everything; you should have a consult with them morning of -- lots of medicines interact with lots of others, and the last thing anyone wants is an unexpected result due to lack of information about what is in your blood stream. Good luck to you...postponing isn't the worst thing if it comes to that. Follow orders on stopping medicine when you should, really.

Definitely follow the orders of you DR when it comes to surgery. I had an uncle that didn't and got loaded on Xmas drinking beer and liquor and everyone knows not to drink the day before surgery. Dude woke up at the wrong time and started freaking out and had to be held down like he was a mental patient. LOL he had no idea why his chest felt like someone took a sledge hammer to it.

Super interesting thread and wtf at the hate Preki got for posting a fact. GL with the sugery Jo.

So it's 4:30 am, the morning of the surgery. Heading to the hospital in two hours. I had planned to have a quiet weekend but ended up going to a birthday on Saturday and a wedding on Sunday. I was worried being around so many people that I might catch a cold or something, but I managed to emerge unscathed. I left work early yesterday and was in bed by 9 pm last night. Right now I am really missing my morning coffee. No solids obviously and I can drink water until 5:30 and then that's it for fluids. The plan is to go into surgery at 9:30 and be done by 11:30. As my girl friend said to me last night, "Jo, you'll fall asleep and then you'll wake up with fantastic tits." Here's hoping! Surgery (or more boob talk)

There is a lot of waiting around, which I'd expected. I brought the NYT crossword for something to do and to try and take my mind off surgery. The answer to 35A is "boob".

Try to relax as best you can. Before you know it, it will be over. Post op, you must follow the doctor's instructions and don't be a hero...take those pain meds.

A couple of weeks of discomfort for decades of a beautiful figure. Good trade off!

Don't take this as a dig, but have you seen a psychiatrist before making these permanent physical changes? I'm referring to the expensive type that will sit and talk with you, rather than the ones that toss a prescription at you.

Well I'm home and feeling much better than I had expected. However, I know that the swelling can really kick in 24 hours later sometimes. One friend has just left and I'm waiting for another to get here. I'm gonna look pretty ridiculous for a week. They are swollen and covered in dressing which is all kept in place by a sports bra type thing. I definitely have a porn star look going on Surgery (or more boob talk).

I went for the 500 cc. I know the 450 cc gave me a c-cup, so I'll probably end up a 38D. I can peek around the dressing and see them and I couldn't be happier Surgery (or more boob talk).

Yes - when I first started my transition. Their advice essentially boiled down to you just have to live it and see whether you like it, which I've been doing for the last four years. There hasn't been a second I regretted it. Maybe a few pangs of loss, but no regret Surgery (or more boob talk).
