He said "take what you need" because he was busy but owed money for pizza. I think it's pretty douchey to come up to someone while collecting money for pizza, and then when they say "take what you need" you decide that you have a license to come up with other things you need money for.

It's basically "Ok this guy gave me $25 when he owed $5. I need to give him $20 back, but oh wait, I did need a few extra bucks for xxxx, I'll just take it out of this guy's change."

Some of you think this is ok?

I once heard of someone who was broke online, asked to borrow some money to play a tourney, and when he shipped it for $6900, didn't so much as thank the person who loaned him the $$, let alone get him anything or take him out for drinks

if you were collecting money for pizza, and i was too lazy to pause a game of fifa to count out 5 dollars, and i gave you a wad of money, and you took 8$ out, 5 for pizza and 3 for tip or a 2 liter of soda no i wouldnt be angry at all. if i was planning on getting angry at something like that i certainly wouldnt say take what you need. no one has answered my question either, how/when/in what tone would you say take what you need jokingly.

in before someone says if i hand you 1000$ for a 5 dollar pizza.

I'll accept some of the blame for not being more concise. Had I handed him the money and told him to take $5 and he had taken $9, then it's a dishonest move on his part. And I'm not a stingy person beyond being a poor college student.

Also, I wasn't angry. I was surprised and said nothing beyond asking him why he took more than $5.

I don't know if "stingy" is the right word for this, but whatever:

My wife and I go to a convenience store one night. We take the dog, so I wait outside while she goes in and buys what we need. A guy walks out of the store having just bought a Maxim magazine and some sort of chewing tobacco and asks me if I can give him $6 because he parked his car in a lot and doesn't have enough to pay to get it out.

Edit: He was holding his purchases in plain sight.

Not really stingy but definitely some kind of less-than-desirable personality trait.

So did you buy the Maxim from him for 6 bucks?

One time my roommate went out to buy us beer, pinwheels, a ball & paddle and an oversized cowboy hat. He stopped to pick up the latest issue of Rhode Island Slut but his wallet got stuck in the dispenser. He asked an old lady for change of a dollar but she said she didn't have any (which seems questionable since old ladies usually carry a change purse). So that was pretty stingy of her.

It's questionable all right. The odds are like one in a million... but I'm telling you there's a chance.

how did he end up getting his wallet? she sounds like the kind of lady that would offer to watch it for him while he goes to get change and then steal it and run off before he gets back.

That's exactly what happened, and it was the worst part of the whole ordeal. Whenever I think about her giving our pinwheels to her grandkids it makes my blood boil.

I just remembered a stingy thing my roommate did. We ate at this diner and when it was time to pay the check he told the cashier that some surly truckers in the corner were going to pick up our tab. Needless to say, I was mortified.

Just remembered one. One of my first jobs, in a really small office working for wealthy yet miserly owners (family run business). I was told on my first day if I wanted coffee I had to chip in, there were 5 office employees and we had to buy our own coffee and tea, cream, sugar, cups, etc.

So I chipped in, but the family who owned the business would actually help themselves to the coffee we bought, while never once bringing in a bag or chipping in for it. They would even offer our coffee and tea to guests.

Obviously got out of there as quickly as I could.

really? that worked? did the waitress/cashier not try to verify that the truckers were willing to pick up the tab in any way?

This isn't stingy- it's stock scam #2 after asking you for gas money. 90% chance that guy does not own a car.

I'm willing to bet the trucker caught up with the perpetrator later on.

As long as he paid back the loan he doesn't belong to this thread...ohh wait...someone already told ya. Paging will...

I assume you said no and went on your way. If not this is not a case of anyone being stingy, its a case if you being a mark, and quite a stupid one at that.

I figured this was quite possibly a scam. I was just surprised that he didn't have more sense than to ask for $6 after clearly having paid at least that much 30 seconds earlier.

I went on my way. F*** that guy.

I'm actually pretty generous about giving people money. I'm willing to sometimes take the risk of being scammed if it's only a few bucks. But good luck if you are asking fo $6 after obviously having spent that much a few seconds ago.
