I have posted stuff about my workplace before, and have more stuff to add. We partner with different vendors/suppliers, and one of them sells tea so we get it at the employee pricing. Tea is pretty inexpensive to begin with, I am talking about the standard tea bags nothing fancy at all. So I am pretty sure we get a box of 80 tea bags for something like $1.25.

It was brought up recently in a meeting that people were being wasteful, and someone asked for an example. The example given was that some people drink several cups of tea a day, and use a different bag each time. It was pointed out that a tea bag could be reused "up to 3 or 4 times" and still be good.

Also, I have diabetes and I bring in my supplies and keep them in my desk drawer in my office for the month. I will bring a box of pen needles, test strips, lancets and alcohol swabs to last for a while. I didn't realize I had used the last alcohol swab (they cost less than 2 cents each) so I took one from the kit they have here. I brought in a new box of alcohol swabs the next day.

It was also mentioned in the meeting that the medical emergency kit is for unexpected injuries, such as a cut or a burn. Nothing that is "anticipated or needed on a regular basis" should be taken from the kit, we should bring in our own supplies. I actually can understand and agree with that. I have worked here 5 years though, and this is the very first time I have taken anything from that kit. So after the meeting, I took one of the swabs I brought in and brought it to her. I said, here you go I had to borrow one of these the other day and I am replacing it. She actually seemed super happy about it, took it, and put it in the kit.

I'm pretty sure that if I was in a staff meeting and someone suggested we save money by reusing teabags I couldn't restrain myself from laughing out loud and calling them an idiot. What's next? Making sure everyone uses both sides of the toilet paper?

We had a useless boss one time who insisted everyone turn off their desktop PC at night to save like a penny each or something. That was about his only initiative and he didn't last long.

Suzzer,

Wat, pretty sure you can save quite a bit on that, and why not turn off the desktop over night?

There were some problems. People logging in from home, batch jobs, backups not happening, etc.

Looking at the burn rate of a resting computer, I think for 100 PCs it would save ~$17/day (100 PCs * 75W/hr resting rate * $.15 per KW * 15 hours not in office)

Which is nothing to a corporate budget. But there is also the conserve energy component. So I proactively give up on this one before I get drug into anything.

recently they decided to put some update into our desktops to automatically shut down at midnight even though the reason we have them is to run optimizations that take forever overnight

Aye Suz, I stand corrected. Pretty stingy then, unless like you said it was for environmental purposes.

I've worked in offices where it was mandatory to shut PCs down at night.

IT included wake on lan cards for overnight updates, pushes, etc.

Which would then put a strain on the help desk the next morning with "zomg my PC was on this morning I bin hacked" calls.

I once worked at a place where the new head guy came in and the first action he took was having half the tubes in all fluorescent light fixtures removed. It was his greatest accomplishment and he was proud of it right up until the day he was fired. And it really sucks working in a dimly lit environment.

Yeah that was pretty much the story with my boss. Everyone hated him. I remember one meeting where he was trying to talk about some technical Java server stuff and he was like "yeah nobody knows" like it was all some vague mystery - and everyone else in the room is like "no, we know - this is our job wtf are you talking about".

I have a former coworker who was a smarmy kiss ass and proudly stated that he used both sides of the copy paper for scanning and faxing things. He suggested we all do this during a meeting and the bosses were pretty excited about the thought of saving copy paper money. I never did it, and I don't think anyone else did. I was secretly happy when he faxed confidential information to the wrong customer because he used the wrong side when he sent it. I am not sure how many people kind of take satisfaction in this kind of thing though, so I am not sure if there is anything wrong with me for being happy about it. He lasted here less than two months.

Watching coworkers do stupid things is both extremely maddening and deliciously entertaining. Though not always simultaneously.

Buying cheap tickets at a non sold-out baseball game with the intention of moving down to better seats is obviously stingy, but is it theft or just the AmericaUSA#1 way?

How is that stingy? Especially if you don't support the team that the money is going to. I generally try to avoid giving unessesary money to huge corporations if at all possible. I'm not taking anyone's seat. I am a bit of a hippie though so meh.

You sound like exactly the type of person I would never associate with IRL so I guess I don't really care what you think, but hate on.

I do the same thing at concerts etc. Once took a girl to a comedy show for our first date. I managed to to sneak us into an unoccupied suite dead center above the stage. I have absolutely zero problem sticking it to the man whenever possible.

Why would you be going to the baseball game of a team you didn't support?

I also come up with creative ways to sneak beer/ booze into music festivals/ concerts/ sporting events etc. Does that make me stingy because I don't want to pay $30 for a 12 pack or $7 for a bottle of water?

When you go to Hollywood Video to get a movie for the night, do you just take the tape without paying the rental fee? The only argument I could accept is how bad team owners **** the cities to get their stadiums built and you're just evening things out.

Whether or not an act is stingy has absolutely nothing to do with who or what is being affected by the act.

Yes, I often do the same thing, but I'm aware that I'm being stingy.imo

Of course it does. Not saying I don't sneak snacks into the movie theater myself, but I don't lie to myself and tell myself that I'm not being stingy.

I live in Chicago as a cards fan so I drive up to Milwaukee a couple times a year since it's only a 1.5hr drive. I also go to Wrigley a few times a year for the Cubs Friday day games since I have most Fridays off, love baseball, and can usually get in the stadium for less than $10
