Most of my friends are engineers, so I probably have the cheapest group of friends here. I think its important to look at stinginess relatively. Someone living paycheck to paycheck and being stingy is one thing, but when your income is almost $100k, like one of my friends, you have an issue.

His income is around $100k and he bought a $140k house that he didn't even put down 20% so he is paying mortgage insurance (the extra cash is just sitting in the bank). His parents paid for college and he has no other debt, but still elected to be cheap.

He also doesn't fill up his tank completely because of the "shock." He someone rationalizes the more frequent, smaller priced fill ups as being ok.

His cheapest moment has to be when three of us went for sushi on Sunday (half priced). We were almost full, but wanted to split one more roll of 6 pieces. He offered that we get something cheap. The most expensive roll was $2.50 and the cheapest roll was $1.50 which would have made the most expensive roll $.33 more expensive per person. How the hell can such a small price differential even register in your mind?

Used to work at a second run movie theatre. When I started working there the price was $1.75 a ticket. Sometime not that that long after I started working there we raised the prices to $1.99.

I had a customer come up to me at the ticket counter, find out about the price increase and say "forget it it's not even worth it," and leave. This was in 2004 or so.

This is neither cheap nor extravagant. It really depends on how much the mortgage insurance is costing him and what kind of return he can get on the money that he doesn't put down. It would be like saying someone who makes a bad investment is cheap. Based on your brief description, it sounds stupid rather than cheap.

I boycott Wendy's for a couple of months every time they raise their value menu prices.

Why even be friends with someone who does this?

Shouldn't one be friends with people they generally like and get along with?

I hit a bbj for 67k and still asked for the $80 in chips for $40 promo the next day. I got up and left after I went bust refusing to re-buy because I would just do the promo the following day.

its very true <3

This doesn't sound cheap, or stingy. It sounds like a low-maintenance dude who probably will retire with a few million and none of his neighbors will know it. It is stupid, I suppose, to pay PMI when that 28K is just sitting in a bank earning dick. But I don't see the stinge in it.

So you're saying he doesn't drive unless it's a hospital emergency or to go to and from work? Wait... you aren't saying that? You're just saying his gas fill-up routine is stupid and he enjoys wasting small amounts of time? OK. Again, not stingy, just ...weird. Esp. when we are in a high gas-inflation era. I always fill my tank up to the max as I assume next time out gas will be $1 more in total or something. And because standing at a gas station around gross people sucks.

A bit weird but still not a huge deal. If anything, the 2 of you should have been like "nah we want this other roll. Dealwithit." You are upset that he viewed $.33 as a huge price difference while at the same time you are viewing a couple pieces of sushi priced $.33 lower as some form of inferior food, not suitable for your 8th helping as you neared full engorgement. That could also be viewed as kind of weird. It's like you are shocked that he didn't opt for the far superior $.42 piece of sushi instead of the clearly inedible $.25 piece.

This isnt as much stingy as it is weird and anal. but ill share anyways. Whenever my roommate and i would buy a sack we'd keep it in a central place and then mark a checkmark on a sheet on the fridge for every hit we took. Then when the sack was done we'd calculate exactly how much we'd each smoked and the person whod smoked more would pay the other one to make up for it.

We also got in an hour long fight over who a .59 can of frozen juice belonged to.

Source forums:

There was a topic about "If your child has a friend over and its lunch time - will you invite the friend to join you?" I was amazed that some people said "No" - Really, how much could a ten year old eat?! And some of them were like "its a principle" - really?! Its just plain rude and selfish.
Wedding and funeral etiquette in Estonia says that there should be place for a assistants (like photographers etc) on the table. Someone asked - could I pay them less, because I fed them. This just is not how things work.

My experience :

I only have one because I dont really have stingy friends and the "I will get this time you will get me another time" usually works perfectly - maybe because non of us counts the money spent on others.
Now one of my bad habits is smoking and everyone who smokes knows that sometimes you run out of cigarettes (especially at evening at the end of a party etc). So usually I have the same system going - You will give me today I will give you some other day. And sometimes there are new cigarettes and someone buys a pack and we switch "I will give you one ordinary and you will give me one of those new ones". So I found it a bit weird that suddenly one of my friends started counting - "You owe me 2 cigarettes" (I really dont have problem with that, but its kind a sad that it makes me feel like I should also count every cigarette I give her as well, but even if I remembered I was too lazy to meet with her just to get 2 cigarettes back) and it got even worse - now she brought some new cigarettes that I had not tried so I went for my usually - "You give me one and I give you one from my pack" and then she wound a problem - her new pack was 50 cents (converted to USD) more expensive then mine (its not like mine was bad as she usually smokes cheaper stuff then I do).

This is stealing not being stingy, but its the same girl

Later she got really weird - me and my friend brought a vodka to the party (now we are not the kind of people that dont share - we are happy to share almost everything as long as you share whit us and the same went for that vodka). So we put it in the freezer to make it cold and a hour later when we went to get it, it wasnt there. We as usual thought that someone drinked it (no big deal) so we ask around if anyone has seen it - nobody has. The girl and her friends start to act weird, staying in one room, not letting anyone in (it was my summerhouse so its not like it a prohibited area for the guests) at first we thought, okey they have things to discuss let them be - then they come out and go back in at about an hour and the same thing happends again and again. So I we heat up the sauna and they go to the sauna while me and my friend go and search their bags and guess what - there is our vodka (half of it at least). So we took it back and went away from the house to drink it at peace. My friend was like "I dont get it all they needed to do was ask and we would have shared it." and I was "Yes I know, so weird." and she was like "Should we confront them?" "No, let it be, lets not start a fight". So we finish the remaining vodka and head back, ofcourse the girls confront us about going through their bags and fight starts. They ended up walking back home (15km away from the city). They even told something like "We brought it, it was ours" - too bad I got bored on our way to my summerhouse and scratched the label so I knew it was ours when I found it.
Our relationship got really bad from there on - she started accusing me on hitting on to her BF (her BF and I have been friends for over 10 years) and I started to give her every reason to accuse me. So she told her BF to choose me or her - she lost. Now we barely say "Hi" when we see eachother in school or somewhere.

My concern is feeding the 30 people who come to the party. If there is leftover food, I encourage people to take it home. I don't think it is appropriate for her to take home enough food to feed 3-4 people prior to most of the party arriving.

This is not stingy at all. My wife and I are in the process of buying a house, and even though we can put down 20%, it makes more sense to keep our money invested and pay the PMI. Your friend is probably just smart.

Counting hits seems like a weird way to keep track of weed consumption if you are using anything other than a one-hitter.

One of my old roommates and I had a communal bag, but we'd just fill it from our individual bags and then we'd have a supply of weed on-hand to smoke when we were hanging out together or had friends over.

slight tangent, but I've ordered the extra meat bowl at chipotle 7-8 times and they have remembered to charge me for it twice. Is this common at other chipotles? how many would remind them to charge you, assuming you remembered yourself?

On borrowing cigarettes, this guy at work "quit" smoking a few weeks ago so he never has any but he's been borrowing 1-2 from me at work every day. He's a nice guy but kind of Mgoo and he's always trying to repay me for bumming smokes. I usually wave it off or laugh (he offered me soup and I'm pretty sure he only had what was in his bowl) but today I saw he had a 12 pack of Squirt and I asked if I could have one. He kind of went blank in the eyes for a few seconds then said, "Yeah, sure..." in a monotone and got up to get one for me. He's a heavy set fellow.

I guess I see your point, I just don't view it that way. For instance, I've had a female friend I have been very close to for almost 10 years now. We ****ed twice in the span of a week 6 or 7 years ago. Why does this one thing that comprised like 0.001% of entire friendship need to define it?

If the sex was wholly casual and driven in no part by a desire for commitment, are they more than just friends?

If that is really your concern, then simply don't invite her next time.

EZ game.
