Not sure if this qualifies as stingy but it pissed me off at the time. I was living in place with five other people in college. One of the guys did semi stingy stuff like angle us out of internet and cable money. He played the "I don't want internet so I'm not paying for it" card knowing full well we'd get it regardless and obviously he'd be able to use it.

He also locked his room at all times, even if he was just steps away from it just to be sure no one went in there to steal any of his food. He would however take food from my room all the time without asking. Anyway, one day I got home from class and he walks up to me and asks if I want a gatorade. I thought it was kind of weird for him to ask this but I said sure. He unlocks his vault of room and sitting on his floor are several huge boxes full of gatorade bottles. He grabs one, goes to hand it to me and then says, "just give me a dollar.". I laugh thinking he was joking but nope. When I obviously refuse, he puts the gatorade back and locks his room.

I don't think I ever would have been able to answer him because I would have fallen out of my chair laughing at him until he left.

I hope you swished his toothbrush in the toilet next time you took a piss.

A friend of mine picked the stems off grapes in the grocery store because they're sold by weight. We continue to make fun of him for this nearly 10 years later.

This whole topic reminds me of a friend Shawn I have. He is 40 years old and still lives in his parents basement. He has been working a professional IT job for 18 years and pretty much banking all his money. He told me he has 6 figures in the bank. We wanted to go to a concert in which Shawn belonged to a pre-sale club, so he would have to buy the tickets which were $60 each. He would not buy my ticket unless I sent him a check before hand.

Another funny thing Shawn did to me...

He was the commisioner of our Fantasy baseball league last year which was a pay league. Shawn collected and held the money from everyone. I ended up winning the league and the top $250 prize. He said he would send me a check.

I received a check for the amount of $249.56. I emailed him wtf was this? He said, I'm not paying for the postage to mail your check to you.
should have complained about the interest he was earning on holding the money imo

I guess that is why I think Henry is stingy here, because if I put myself in the same spot Henry was in, things turn out different.

I love how some people are trying to turn it around and make it appear like I am the stingy one. I am always the one fronting the tickets, hotel rooms, food for tailing gating, etc, etc. Thing is, my friends always pitch in when the time comes and never leave me in the dark so I keep doing it over and over. Henry didn't, which I found different from my norm, so I posted iit.
i agree with most of what youre saying- i just dont get why you draw a distinction bw him paying cash and with a gift card

sr year of college, my roomate got in a small crash with his friends car, and asked me to loan him some money, so he didnt have to ask his parents for it. i give him like 500 bucks. over the summer, he sublets our apartment (we were both planning on spending it out of town) and doesn't offer me my 1/2. pays me back about 6 months after getting sublettors money, and about a year after the accident and loan.

A friend of mine who works in an office during lunch time they would eat out with his friends, so everybody else will order but this guy have his lunchbox all the time and would only order his drinks and when its time to pay the bills everybody would pay for what they have ordered and this guy would always give less of what he needs to pay and when the waiter comes back for their change everybody else will just stand up and leave the change for the tip and this guy will get the tip for himself!!! thats stingy!

There was this buffet in Maryland that I used to go to. They had a deal that if you wanted food "to go" you could put it in a container and pay by the weight. I was walking through the buffet line and see a rather large woman picking up fried chicken with her hands, pulling the bones out, putting them back in the pan, and her meat in the container. Sigh

Wow, this thread just keeps on chugging along. I'm always shocked to see it on the front page, thinking it has to die some time.

Reminded me of this story, hope you like it:

Art Manteris ran the Las Vegas Hilton's SuperBook when it opened. He wrote a book called "SuperBookie". I was young then, and didn't know how lame Art Manteris was at the time, so I bought the book. Incredibly forgettable, but I always liked this anecdote from it:

Back then, if a cashier came up short $20 or less, he didn't have to worry about it. Sure enough, they had one cashier who was exactly $20 short every day.

SUPERVISOR: Whaddaya got?
CLERK: Twenty short.
SUPERVISOR: Turn it in!

This happened every day.

SUPERVISOR: Whaddaya got?
CLERK: Twenty short.
SUPERVISOR: Turn it in!

Then, one day:

SUPERVISOR: Whaddaya got?
CLERK: Hundred short.
SUPERVISOR: Count it again!
(after a while)
SUPERVISOR: Now whaddaya got?
CLERK: Twenty short.
SUPERVISOR: Turn it in!

in Kindergarten i was learning to count so we were supposed to bring in a bag of 100 pennies and a bag of 100 nickels

i could only afford to bring in the bag of pennies so at the time i said to my "best friend" ill trade you my bag of pennies for your bag of nickels because it would be so much cooler to have 2 bags of pennies instead of one of each

he agreed and i spent my profit at the ice cream truck

i really cant believe i hustled like that in kindergarden
