Most of the time when I receive improper change it's the other way around, like the bill is $30.17 and I give 2 twenties and the waitress brings back $10. I'm sure they've found through experience that they end up with bigger tips that way ("Hey, she was pretty accommodating, not bringing me a bunch of change to have to carry around. Here's an extra buck for her").

Meh, I don't feel that is stingy to mention. It is just a factor that should have come into play. In total for the 5 others, I fronted around $600 2 months in advance. I did not get the money until game day. Basically I "loaned" Uncle Henry $120 for 2 months for free.

thinking that buying tickets ahead of time for a group and getting paid back at the game is a free loan is stingy

Fine call me stingy, but if it's not a free loan, then what is it?

If it's a problem to not have that money until the day of the game- you either shouldn't buy the tickets or should make it clear you'd like to be paid back sooner.

If you didn't do those things and you're just bitching, you are not a very awesome person.

Tough crowd itt. I front friends tickets all the time without a second thought. I have 4 tickets at home right now for the Mayhemfest coming up in July. Likewise most of my friends do it for me. In this case, Uncle Henry was not my friend. I had met him once prior.

This whole topic reminds me of a friend Shawn I have. He is 40 years old and still lives in his parents basement. He has been working a professional IT job for 18 years and pretty much banking all his money. He told me he has 6 figures in the bank. We wanted to go to a concert in which Shawn belonged to a pre-sale club, so he would have to buy the tickets which were $60 each. He would not buy my ticket unless I sent him a check before hand.

Another funny thing Shawn did to me...

He was the commisioner of our Fantasy baseball league last year which was a pay league. Shawn collected and held the money from everyone. I ended up winning the league and the top $250 prize. He said he would send me a check.

I received a check for the amount of $249.56. I emailed him wtf was this? He said, I'm not paying for the postage to mail your check to you.

I think I am speaking for all cashiers when I say this. I do not care how much goes in the tip jar. If you drop one cent in I am not going to think, "What a stingy dick." In the end all the coins add up.

I think we have a winner ITT. Making $60k+ a year not having to pay for rent/utilities, having a 6 figure bank account, and he makes you pay, with your prize money, $.44 postage.

So why did you guys go to a Browns game?

And yes, Shawn's postage stamp antics win the thread.

Please get in touch with Shawn regarding reimbursement for the postage on the concert tickets.

generally i will do some elaborate 'rearranging my money' or 'wiping down the pint i have just purchased' trick so i don't feel like an idiot standing about.

told this to a friend once and he said he will purposefully pay with a larger bill to avoid this situation, haha.
I just tell them that I don't want the penny, and then walk away.

Wife works at bed and breakfast. A guest informed her of a problem with a door being out of adjustment or something, and that they needed to fix it. It opened and closed fine, I think there was just a bit of friction, no guest had commented on it for years. But he informed he was a contractor and knew about such things, and it needed to be fixed. Yeah right buddy, we'll get right on it.

When he checked out, he left a note saying he had fixed the door, and to take that in lieu of a tip.

Yeh I agree with Yeti feeling a bit stupid saying this. As long it's obvious I'll just take whatever, say thanks and go.
The people at newsagents/pubs/etc know it's not some crappy tip and its just you not wanting it and trying to speed up the transaction for them.

Nah, Shawn's cool to hang out with. He can do something like that to me and I know I will be able to get even with him in the future. As a matter of fact, one of the Mayhem tickets I mentioned earlier are for him. Muhhahahaha.

If the door worked better then he just saved you some money... I would be very grateful, unless the average tip is around $250.

So it was you. Sorry dude, the door worked fine for years, you were just being a cheap nit. And you tipped the owner, not the maid. Thanks for nothing. But your note is now on the bulletin board in the office for posterity's amusement.

I read this as Shawn messing with you, possibly for being cheap yourself.

eva,

Did you use a whole tank of gas to drive to the game and back? Obviously, if not, the whole price of the tank of gas shouldn't be considered when thinking of "what the others owe you." If, as is more likely, you used a gallon or two in he round trip, they only "owe" you their share of those couple gallons. To make this clearer, in case you're still not understanding (which seems likely from your understanding of stinginess thus far), if, on the way to the game you told them "It'll just be a few minutes, I have to pick up my new car" they obviously wouldn't owe you 1/3 of the purchase price of the new car.

re: maid situation.

A reasonable owner would give the maid a standard tip or some fraction thereof in this situation. I disagree that the guest was being particularly stingy; keep in mind that this guest was unhappy wrt the door, and when you didn't fix it, he was unlikely to tip anyway (unreasonable as that may be).
