I'm sure we all know at least one person who are so miserly that they do things that are astonishing. The kind who are not only mean when it comes to spending their own money but will also have no problems in taking advantage of other people's generosity.

For example, I know this tightwad who came to a party and brought a 6 pack of beer (the cheapest, nastiest stuff in the supermarket-the stuff he usually drinks). So anyway my friend who is the host tells him to put them in the fridge with all the drink that everyone else brought. This guy then spent the night drinking the beers that everyone else brought and at the end of the night he went to the fridge, took his 6 beers (that nobody had drank) and left.

I don't have any stories, but I bet Henry does. I'll let him take over the thread.

I saw on tv a story about a family who was stingy. They collected ketchup packets from McD's and would open them all up and pour them into a big Heinz bottle. Also, they would unroll their 2-ply toilet paper and make 2 1-ply rolls.

I worked for a guy that owned a custom boat company, an ARCO gas station w/ a self serve car wash and video poker machines and a flower shop here in Vegas. He was a millionaire many many times over. This cheap mother****er used to reuse tea bags!

No not some fancy tea bags either, Tetley ****ing tea, the box that comes with like 100 teabags for $1.99. I finally called him out on it one day and he said he likes his tea weak! I laughed in his face and made him give me a raise. Till the day I quit he swore he liked his tea "weak!" Cheap ass mother****er!!

One of aunts married a guy who used to wash his dental floss, hang it on the line to dry and then re-use it.

"HAHA! Weak tea! Pay me more, right now, mother****er!"

Is that how it went?

Is this as douchey as I imagine?

At a wedding last weekend, beer and wine are free at the reception. Anything else is cost. Everything, however, is free for the bridal party.

One of the groomsman was going and getting non-free hard(er) drinks (for free), and then giving them to his girlfriend, so she wouldn't have to pay.

I feel like he was taking advantage of the bride and groom's good nature (or family's), when she could have just drank for free since they did offer partially open bar.

Seems douchey....yes or no?

that does seem douchey especially like you said considering the beer and wine were free anyway.

when my grandad died and my grandma moved out i had to go clean her fridge and she had like 2 pounds of bbq, ketchup, honey mustard in there. the individual packets from fast food places etc.

THE stingiest thing though is i have a buddy who, mr pink style, refuses to tip unless the waitress practically gives him a handy under the table. i've bowed out of going places before cause i heard he was going and i knew he wouldnt tip. hes going to get all of our food spit on.

At a Baja Fresh restaurant. A customer grabbed a paper bowl and completely hogged all the pico de gallo from the salsa bar. The biggest dick move I seen lately.

I get that in some areas cash bar at weddings are the norm so I don't have a problem with that, but if you can't afford a full open bar for all of your guests just make it beer and wine for everyone. Treating your guests differently is just weird IMO.

+1. The segregation by the hosts was way douchier. Don't see anything wrong with what he was doing, it was for his GF not all his mates.

Guy goes to a sports bar to watch a football game. Sits with us, just orders water. The entire night. No tip for waitress. Stopped inviting him. He shows up on his own another time, does the same thing.

With a bunch of other people, fine. By himself, uber-douche.

I do this. I stalked a pair of running shoes for months while they went on sale, then clearance, then 50% off that, on some kind of scratch-and-save day. Got them for like $25 and wore them for six years.

I can list off a lot of institutional stinginess. When I worked at McDonald's a million years ago I got in trouble for emptying the big dining room garbage bins when they were full but not yet overflowing (and thus, still a weight and size I could carry). The manager freaked out and followed me out to the garbage paddock, saying that businesses succeed or fail on their garbage bag consumption, and I was lucky that the owner didn't see this because I'd get written up for just throwing away $0.02 like that.

Years later I had a government job and the cleaning supplies were all from the dollar store, spray bottles with names like Glassdex and Amazing. Ordinarily I'd just call that cheap, but it has the stench of stingy considering their pay scales.

I had a roommate who was going to the store and asked if I wanted a candy bar, he saw they were buy 1 get 1 free. I said sure. He came back and asked that I give him 50 cents for "my half." I had to go find 2 quarters in my room.

Readers Digest recently did an article on these people. They take it to a level you couldn't imagine. I'm talking about people who don't leave their trash out for the garbage men like everyone else--instead, they keep watch, and when the garbage truck arrives, they run outside and dump their trash into the truck themselves so they can re-use the garbage bag.

If I have time later, I'll dig up the article and post more examples.

Guy I know used to work in a vending machine call centre, basically said he spent his day mailing out 10c-€1 checks to people who got short changed or lost their money in vending machines

About 10 years ago I was a manager at a Pizza Hut in NJ. There were always tons of cheap Indian people. At least once a week I would get a coupon that had expired 5-10 years prior. I mean we are talking like 2 larges pizzas for $4.99 or stuff like that. They would get pissed when I told them the coupon expired in 1985. I found out they used to go to the library and look at old Sunday newspapers and take coupons out.

My dad used to scream bloody hell at my mom when she'd buy a national brand instead of a store brand. He made her cry over trashbags one time. He was quite mad about money, but now he's well off and he has relaxed a little.

He grew up in the Depression, and his father lost his big farm in a bank run.

Obviously yelling at someone is bad. But I don't think buying store brands is being cheap. Why would someone pay $4.00 for Glad garbage bags when they can get a cheapo brand for $1.50? It doesn't have to be just garbage bags, it can be anything. Soda, detergant, ect.

The price difference isn't close to being that much in my experience. Typically it's less that 25%, often 10 or 15. Mostly it was just him being insane though.

Bought some pizzas with friends. Everyone was allotted 3 or 4 slices. One guy cherry picked the largest pieces from different pizzas.
