That would only be stingy if the kid told your boss that he couldn't eat his garbage.

The average meal is $40 with 2 people. At 10%, $4/30mins. If they have the normal 4 tables, that's $16/30mins or $32/hr in addition to their base.

So you think waiters should be making about $70/hr?
At the risk of angering the mods, someone has to correct you on this. It will be my only post, no need to reply. Servers "tip out" to food runners, assistant servers, barbacks, and so on. By no means do they keep all the money you tip them. If you go to the same places regularly, try being a better tipper and you will probably find that it is worth the extra $.

Waiters also have downtime/slow groups/bad nights, bad tippers, etc. that they have to deal with. I don't think many waiters are making huge bank but a decent wage for their time. But you only see them typically when they're busy. Similarly, many casino employees have to work full time but many of the casinos are dead unless it's a weekend night so you need to average out their tips to compensate when they aren't making much.

samuri,

Not being aware of what you wrote re: tipouts is understandable imo, and doesn't make the post stupid - just not as well-informed as it could be. It's (among other things) the stuff that capone mentions that makes her "analysis" just plain idiotic.

Further discussion on this topic can be had in the poor poster thread.

My old roommate of one summer would purposefully not pick up credit card at end of night at the bar so he wouldn’t have to tip.

He would go there the next afternoon to retrieve his card.

He would always say, “I am going to Jew this joint.”

Carry on my Christian son...

Why would picking up his card the next day absolve him of tipping? I assume he still has to sign for it in front of someone, possibly even a manager if it's the next afternoon.

Places generally close out tabs at the end of the night whether the person is there or not. They can only bill what was actually charged and can't add a tip on their own unless there's a policy like auto-grat or pre-set service charge. For that reason, some places around here now have a sign posted like "left credit card bills will have 20% tip added."

This.

He didn’t sign anything. They charge your card at the end of the night. Which is the reason they take the physical card. This guy on his word he will pay??? Lol.

I love “I’ve been keeping my eye on them for a while”. I just imagine him hoping that no one steps on them when people walk by...and to do this all in front of coworkers...best outing ever.

I don't exactly think that was stingy either, but still a great story.

Probably not as bad as most of the coupon clippers out there.

I've always been fascinated by coupon clipping, possibly because we don't really have anything like that here. Seeing those shows where people save huge amounts of money is quite incredible. I feel like my frugal side would want to get in on it but a lot of the stuff I wouldn't use/eat so I'd probaby donate it to a food bank or something.

This thread makes me think. I mean.... am I frugal or am I stingy?

What is the difference between frugal and stingy? I think it is attitude towards money. Stingy is when money is very high in the value system. Frugal is to be very deliberate about spending and spend money according to your value system.

For example if we take this story with boss asking for food. It made me cringe. I wonder why did he do it. To save the cost of this food for the higher purpose of.....? Is he generally so? What place has "throwing food away" in his value system? Or did he do it just to save this money to have a bigger pile of money? I remember my grand-grandma going with the hand over the table surface after the dinner and eating this crumbs. That was because she went through very hungry times. And even if that was many years in the past, she was just not able to throw away even crumbs from the dinner table and not because she was stingy.

I do basically the same like this boss. I am pretty active in a foodsharing network. I go two times a week to a russian grocery store and sort through their "best before" stuff. They would normally throw this stuff away. I take from it what I need and the remainder gets distributed in the network. From this store the network gets on average something around 10 kg of diary and 15 kg of veg and fruits per week.

And I do get paid in my job "pretty darn well". It just would make me cringe to see this stuff in the garbage can. I do it not for money, but because it promotes my value system of throwing less stuff away, being resourceful, being green.....

Stingy and frugal have similar literal meanings, but "stingy" has a more negative connotation and is further set apart by the additional meaning of selfishness or unwillingness to spend on others.

I would say that "stingy" also includes an implied unreasonableness to the person's actions; if two people carry out the same overtly cheap actions, but one is reasonably well-off and the other is destitute and really does need to take significant measures just to stay afloat, it would be weird to label the latter as "stingy."

I don't think you and my boss are at all alike, nor are the reasons behind your actions. He's just...cheap. JUST NOW AT THIS VERY MOMENT a staff member came by passing out homemade jam as Christmas gifts. He had 3 types that he and his wife made. Would I prefer peach, raspberry or peach/raspberry. I chose peach and then he moved on to the boss and gave the boss the same spiel.

Boss had a pained look on his face and didn't answer.

Guy "They're all homemade by my wife and me. You don't like any of the flavors?" hurt expression

Boss "Well I do..."

Guy "Great which would you like?"

Boss "Well how much are they?"

Guy "I'm trying to give you a Christmas gift!"

Boss "Oh I thought you were selling them, maybe for your kids. In that case, I'll take 2 peach if you have enough." (I **** you not)

Guy "Well let me see if I have any left after I'm done and I'll bring you another."

I started to respond to Lapka's comment when all of that took place.

Lapka you are nothing like him. I don't know for sure why he is the way he is...maybe he was hungry as a child like your great-grandmother but omg. He's just always on the look out for something free, especially and particularly food.

"Frugal" is a one-party transaction. A person decides not to spend more than the minimum (can be none) amount.

"Stingy" implies that the transaction involves a second-party and that one component of the first party's decision to spend so little is to keep someone else from receiving it.

Treat the boss to some free chicken fingers beforehand and your review would be fine

Haha, well the only performance review he's involved in is mine, not the architects.
