Yes, there are types of cases that become federal, like hate crimes or kidnappings that cross state lines. Off the top of my head I don't see anything here that would result in a move to the federal level, though. The feds taking over a state crime is relatively rare. They offer help with lab stuff and profiling or the investigation on request, but actually taking over the case? Really rare.
If there's a change of venue it will be within state, and will be because the judge determines a fair trial cannot be conducted locally because of the media coverage.
