I'm fine with being in the minority on this one. My example makes me sound like a tool applying for sainthood I guess, but half of it is just seeing how people react to having their bubble broken. The keyword is "occasionally" of course. This is far from an original thought obv, but I do think that technology tends to isolate us in our day to day surroundings while it connects us remotely. Tempering that to some degree is a good thing imo.

Talking to old people is cool and no need to feel like a tool for saying you do it partly to be nice.

I wouldn't even call Tyler elderly, but I'm pretty old myself. I think there are 3 or 4 posters itt in their mid-fifties. Maybe HT is second oldest.

And if him or you are not able to have an interesting/ +EV for you conversation with majority (> 50%) of elderly people, it is totally your problem.

Lot of variance in olds. In some instances I love to hear their stories, but also am leery of getting into a spot like Alobar describes.

Here's some advice: Beware of "Enter Sandman" and flexing in mirrors. Alobar gives no quarter.

If you don't want to get stuck but just want a very quickish convo the grocery line isn't a bad place to do it. Once everything is rung up its "Been lovely chatting with you, have a great day!" and off you go with your trolley.

i've got a practiced "**** off" face that I use when I don't feel like making small chat. there are times when I'm receptive to it and will engage in it but for the love of god I hate people that just approach people with conversation and assume that you're open to it.

Now I have indeed some comprehension problems. I know that he likes Metallica. Should that change anything here? Should I cut him some slack in being mean?

lapka, Alobar was one of the best posters in OOT long before you ever started posting here. It's only in the last few years that he's started to suck. He's often been very helpful on 2p2. For example, he's gone well out of his way to help a low-IQ poster with some banking he was unable to do for himself.

P.S. Don't try to figure out the Metallica comment unless you've read through the first Babs thread

Last night I was on my way to pick up some beer and a crazy looking older man ran into the street directly in front of my car and I just barely missed hitting him.

He started screaming "CAN YOU GIVE ME A RIDE THEY STOLE MY BIKE!!!" and i just said NOPE CALL THE POLICE and proceeded to gtfo.

i went into the store and saw the guy sucker some young looking kid into helping him. he was clearly and obviously insane, running around screaming like he'd been shot.

don't talk to strangers is a good general rule.
