Without googling I would separate it in pen and ultimate and assume some kind of cool pen. Probably totally wrong.

I think the majority of people who misuse the word think (c), at least that’s how I’ve most often heard it misused. Haven’t really heard/read it as (a), so ~1, 43, 55, ~1.

I once had a boss that used penultimate to mean "the very best" all the time. I pointed out what it meant several times but he kept doing it, usually in a public speaking setting. Other than that he was really smart.

Penultimate is the perfect word to describe the last meaningful hand of a poker tournament after it gets HU and one guy gets crippled.

I don't have any data but my guess is

a. 20
b. 15
c. 64
d. 1

Lapka it means second to last. Edit: actually I guess that's a little misleading. It wouldn't be used in a negative context as in "the 31st ranked team out of 32 is the penultimate team".

A long time ago, people could become legit D-list tv celebrities by making the final table of a WPT event. One person to do this was a guy named Paul Phillips, and years ago I found his blog, which I found funny and thoughtful.

He lamented the very topic of the misuse of "penultimate" by most people, as only he can. And had a humorous follow-up post about a month later.

So there I am, digging down an internet rabbit hole from a 13 year old blog post, and I spot a Howard Treesong in the comments!

I guess poker's a small world.

Haha that's hilarious.

Its true though, when I was in high school and the WPT started, we thought all those people were legends, especially Paul Phillips.

My high school poker friends in our 5 dollar games believed at the time (and perhaps still believe today) that Gus Hansen's genius is... misunderstood.

Of course Howard shows up. He also had a good screed on 'it begs the question'

Howard,

That was some abysmal posting buddy.

Didn't want to write that in weight loss thread because it has somehow nothing to do with weight loss. Hope that this also doesn't break " no poker" rule here.

I am completely willing to play nano stakes any variant against basically any of the regs here except MLYLT, although I realise that I am a dog against 90% of OOT population, because i believe that it has a good chance to be fun. I am willing to play for meaningful money with two or may be max three of the regs here, because i am a pussy that tries to avoid lost bets for solid money. I am not willing to play with MLYLT neither for big , no for small money, no any games that don't involve money at all, because I am completely sure that it would be zero fun for me. Any further questions?

Just one: why are you such a pussy?

Howard Treesong, constrained dynamist who struggles mightily with his daily Starbucks transaction.

Well, yes. If I were an unconstrained dynamist, I’d accept whatever horse-**** that today’s barista comes up with in regard to my name. “Ray.” “Oh, you mean ‘Ryan’?” “Sure.”
