Look what just got moved to it's launch stand:

Good luck SN9! I'm guessing it's getting launched in early January.

and SN10 just got moved to the high bay to get it's nosecone mated:

SpaceX is has a scheduled launch window for Starship SN9 sometime this afternoon from now until 7pm EST. This follows last year's successful launch and "difficult" landing of Starship SN8.

People are guessing the launch will be towards the later part of the afternoon.

The plan is to repeat the SN8 flight profile by sending the rocket on a flight to a 12.5 km (41,000 ft) height. At this point, the rocket will do a belly flop and "skydive" with it's fins to the landing pad. As it gets closer to the ground, it will reignite it's engines and rotate to a vertical position and use retro-propulsion to land vertically.

Flight scrubbed due to high winds. Maybe tomorrow but there is rain in the forecast.

Tomorrow's (Tuesday) window opens at 9am EST.

What's the reason for turning upright at the last second?

To use aero drag to keep it at terminal velocity I think. They will have gas thrusters in future to make turn easier but will still be late. I think that means less fuel is needed with not as much reentry burn like falcon 9.

It appears that SpaceX will make another attempt to launch SN9 tomorrow (Thursday). They haven't released any times but based on past schedules, it'll probably be sometime in the afternoon.

They are evacuating the Boca Chica residents starting at 9am EST.

Quote:
As early as Thursday, January 28, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 9 (SN9) – the second high-altitude suborbital flight test of a Starship prototype from our site in Cameron County, Texas. Similar to the high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 8 (SN8), SN9 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude. SN9 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN9’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

There will be a live feed of the flight test available here that will start a few minutes prior to liftoff. Given the dynamic schedule of development testing, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward SpaceX’s second high-altitude flight test of Starship!

A launch of Starship SN9 is looking good for today! They activated the flight termination system and were just testing the flaps. There are still people at the launch pad and so I'm guessing the flight is still 3+ hours away. Since this is a testing operation, SpaceX doesn't release launch time information.

FAA didn't give SpaceX clearance to launch. Elon is pissed.

Another try as soon as tomorrow.

I imagine that is why he bought the 2 oil rigs to turn into ocean launch platforms. Way less(none?) hoops to jump through to launch multiple ships in a day.

That sounds better than the alternative of "poor government space programs, that end up spending taxpayer dollars to build giant job-programs that come out over-budget, over-schedule and under-delivered. Programs designed to maximize red tape and waste."

No flight today. FAA has still not approved the flight.

Elon's respond to the whole situation? He is currently moving SN10 out to the launch pad.
There will be *two* starships, SN9 and SN10 sitting on the pads.

SN11 is mostly complete in the production highbay.

Now there are two Starships on the launch pads! SN10 is on the left, SN9 is on the right.

Launch of Starship SN9 is currently scheduled for Tuesday but SpaceX still doesn't yet have FAA approval.

Does SpaceX or another company have any future plans for launching probes to planets or do the costs not make it feasible? I'd love to get to a place where planet/comet/asteroid probes are being sent up every year.

No problem. I find it all really interesting.

I also love how SpaceX is turning the Aerospace industry upside down.

OMG, The FAA just gave SpaceX SN9 flight approval. Possible flight tomorrow (Tuesday)!

The local residents have been told to evacuate.
