Unfortunately I can't find a link for it, but Dishwalla's "It's Going to Take Some Time" is the best cover of a Carpenters tune ever. And I'm not ashamed to say that I dig the Carpenters.

Yes. No cover of We've Only Just Begun or Close to You could be better than the original.

Nirvana's cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World:

Pretty sure there are like ten covers of Bowie songs out there that are better than the original.

Michael Jackson's cover of that Alien Ant Farm song is pretty dope.

Exactly. Since the thread is about covers being better than the originals, I didn't mention Luther Vandross's cover of "Superstar", which is probably as good as the original (but not better), because the original is so damn good.

For worst cover, I'll vote for Michael Damien's Rock On:

Here's David Essex's original:

All the mystery and weirdness is absent in the cover.

This instrumental metal version of Somwhere Over the Rainbow by Chris Impelliterri is really cool. (Note: it's not by Yngwie, title on youtube is wrong)

Also seem like a good opportunity to post this;
A lounge music cover of Rancid Amputation by Cannibal Corpse. Funny stuff.

i don't know if it's better, but i like that Cat Power version of Sea of Love(from Juno). that could all be colored by the fact that i'd like to bang her.

I mean, after the first minute I thought it couldn't get worse. Then the echoes came in.

Wrong. I have the exact opposite of what *most* people would consider good taste in music (mostly punk and hardcore), and almost everyone I've played MFATGG for (including my mom) says they enjoy the covers more than the originals.

my contribution: I like both Clapton's and Guns n' roses 'knockin' on heaven's door' more than Bob Dylans.

Barracuda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqQkE...om=PL&index=13

Amazing Grace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OObi...rom=PL&index=6

Worst cover ever: My Generation (warning: this is mind numbingly bad): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvC6j...om=PL&index=42

Wait...we have a new leader for worst cover ever, suggested by my son: You Have Another Thing Coming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoMwhm-OOg8

Some good stuff ITT...I'd never heard the Thin Lizzy version of Whiskey in The Jar. Very nice...Nobody does Gimme Shelter better than the Stones...Love Elton John's version of Pinball Wizard...Frank Zappa was awesome and so is Buckwheat Zydeco...Bangles, Alien Ant Farm and Hendrix are better than the originals, IMO.
