I was forced by my grandmother to watch kittens be drowned as it 'was a part of life' when I was maybe 8 or 9. I think she considered me to be too soft and that this would toughen me up. I cried myself to sleep the next few weeks so I don't think it had the desired outcome she wanted. Strangely I didn't react the same way in regards to shooting. I think it was because I believed the animals at least had a chance to get away.
Saw a guy at Walmart with a live parrot on his shoulder. Don't know if he had a peg-leg, but maybe, since he was riding a scooter. No eye patch though.
