It's not just "large breeds" it's fighting/attack bred dogs.

I'm not really for the ban, but I don't think it's unreasonable and I'd never own a fighting breed.
No word about german sheperds? did you read my first post itt? they are the meanest breed in the history of dogkind, and no, i´m not for banning them.

I must have missed the part where you showed one shred of statistical data backing up this claim about german shephards being the meanest breed in the history of dogkind.

Re: Should pit bulls be allowed to breed?

I have heard German Shepards bite a lot and they are certainly often trained and probably somewhat bred for aggression.

The difference is the seriousness of the injuries caused. In the study cited above of serious injuries from dogs from 1982 to 2006 in Canada and the US there were 63 such attacks by German Shepards and 1110 from pit bull terriers.

Re: Should pit bulls be allowed to breed?

Pitbulls have a bad reputation because they are a power breed dog that needs exercise which they usually are not given. They are no more dangerous than any of these other power breed dogs generally thought of being a ticking time bomb.

Their jaws do not lock.

Their bite cannot crush steel girders.

They are responsible for fewer fatal attacks per dog than the other power breeds (chows are the worst).

The big problem is that there are something like 5 million APBTs registered with the AKC which is a large number of a power breed dog. If pitbulls represent 70% of "dangerous dogs" then they will be responsible for a larger number of dog attacks.

I think dog overpopulation is already a huge problem and ALL owners should be required to get their dogs fixed. I think a special license should be required for dog breeding and it should become commonplace to see a license before getting a dog from someone. People are idiots, however, and puppies are cute. It would never work.

I currently have two tiny immasculating poodle mix dogs (that are awesome and I love). I'm planning on getting an AmStaff in 5-10 years because they are awesome dogs (and are typically referred to as "Nanny Dogs" because of how good they are with young children).

Being "nice as can be" to a pitbull does not mean you are taking care of it correctly, just like with a child.

Be that as it may, pitbulls are the breed winding up with enough irresponsible owners to set off more alarm bells than any other breed. There is clearly a problem, regardless of the hows and whys.

There are plenty of potential dangers currently flying under the radar that if society all of a sudden decided were cool there would be public outcry. Maybe there are more dangerous breeds than pitbulls, but unfortunately until those breeds start showing up in DMX videos, and significantly adding to the national maul rate, they will go unnoticed and unchecked.

33% of all deaths from dogs at the tune of 35 some-odd deaths per year, so give or take 12 deaths. 4.5 million pit bulls registered in the US. So, about 2.6 deaths per million pit bulls.

Lightning kills 58 people each year. 25 million lightning hits in the US. So, about 2.32 deaths per million lightning hits.

How about some perspective?

Ban lightning.

Also how many non-lethal mauls per million pitbulls out of curiosity?

No idea, and I'm leaving work so no time to look it up.

The reality is, however, that these incidents are so far and few between that they're basically statistically insignificant.

This is like the irrational fear of sharks that people have even though something akin to 2 people per year in the US are killed by sharks.

Bees kill more people in the US yearly than all dogs combined. Ban delicious honey imo.

That "shred of statistical data" you request is my whole life experience with dogs, i trust that more than any statistic. If you have a different record with special breeds of dogs, just let me know, and i will reconsider.

You are comparing dogs to lightning now? When determining which dogs are the most dangerous, a good comparison would be...other dogs. I think that would allow us to have a good perspective on the matter.

The lightning argument is a much better argument than trying to say other breeds are anywhere near as dangerous as Pitbulls or similar fighting breeds.

I stopped reading 50 posts into this thread, but I would kill 90% of huskies and 100% of chows if I met them(I almost never trust a chow). (maybe not kill but sterilize.) Also weimmereiner's piss me off.

(Theyre playing with a tennis ball)

We adopted this pit bull from a shelter about 3 months ago. Havent seen anything that id classify as "mean". He's alot more playful/energetic than the malimute but thats probably because he's alot younger than the malimute. Ive had my 10 yr old sister over and had no problems leaving them in a room alone. I wouldnt, however, leave it alone with a toddler because......

ITS A ****ING TODDLER WHY WOULD I LEAVE HIM/HER ALONE AT ALL, HOLY CHRIST. PARENTING 101.

Sounds like you wouldn't have even tried to help the other dog. "Hey it's a dog fight, let them duke it out." I'm going to guess you're one of those macho/insecure guys that wouldn't be caught dead with a non-badass dog.

Go **** yourself and welcome to my ignore.
Wow, ultra defensive much? I simply pointed out that lots of mixed breeds can have very pit-like characteristics. I've got a shelter dog that definitely has pit in her, she's got the pit head, but is in no way 100% pit. Should we "ban" 100% pit bulls only? What about all the dogs that are now considered dangerous because they have some pit in them? Once pits are banned, some other breed - like Dalmations, Chows, Dobermans, whatever - is going to step up to the top of the "most dangerous" list, and people will start noticing Doberman attacks and saying, "Wow this animal is an out-of-control weapon!"

And obviously whether or not I would step in the middle of a dog fight depends completely on the situation, but doing so definitely carries risk. Acting like it was no big deal to get between a pit and whatever it's attacking, but also crying about how dangerous pits are is kind of lol.

Pitbulls are smart, athletic, and obedient dogs. IMO, some people should not have pit bulls, but some people should not have kids either. Pits that are trained are amazing animals.

I obviously open myself up to a lot of hate with this view, but I really don't understand why anyone would ever want a dog as a pet, especially a potentially violent one.

Clearly there would be no problem if all dog owners were resposnsible and properly trained in caring for their animal, but that will never happen, and as always its the idiots who ruin it for the others. Even so, why does anybody need a dog that could kill a person?

Any dog, iirc, can be turned into a dangerous animal, or a wonderful one, based on the owners.
