from a site on training wolves:

Another important issue to consider when making the commitment to care for a wolf or hybrid is the fact that they are predators and display predatory behavior in an intensity far beyond that of a dog. These animals ARE NOT GOOD WITH CHILDREN!! They can be safe in a few instances while meeting children in a controlled manner (such as while on a leash). If the child should wiggle, squirm or make small prey-like noises the animal can react quickly and undesirably in that it can attack the child without more than a subtle warning. The squirming child can trigger a predatory attack in an animal which was a moment earlier submitting to the same child. This includes a child the animal has known since puppyhood and has "always been good with the child." This but one of the reasons wolves and hybrids don't make good pets.

@ DBLK Youre gonna have to cite a source on that one given i have seen a documentary on selective breeding in dogs from wild wolves and the control subjects were WAY more aggro.

Woman attacked by two pit bulls. Wait, no, it was a lab and a boxer...

Loool did you even read the story?

Quote:
A man says his sister had been drinking and started hitting and pushing him.

When officers arrived, they say the dogs were on top of her and had blood around their mouths. Police spokesperson Jeff Kappel says the dogs charged the officers and one of them opened fire.

But the emotionally distraught brother who says he saw it all says that's not how it went down.

"The guy had no reason to shoot that dog. I was close to the dog. He just (expletive) takes the gun and 'boom!'"

But police spokesperson Kappel says the dogs were threatening the officers.

"The front door was unlocked. So they open the front door to investigate further. They were immediately confronted by two large agitated dogs," says Kappel.

The officer opened fire, killing a golden lab and injuring a boxer, which was taken to a local animal hospital.
Any dog on earth will come to the defense of it's owner, and will get agitated when that person even appears to be in a fight with someone else. Not to mention they might come at a cop who busts into the house during that kind of heightened excitement. And finally of course there's no way a cop would exaggerate the situation to justify killing someone's dog. Were they confronted by the dogs, or were the dogs on top of the sister with blood on their mouths?

Please find me a gang of labs attacking and killing a 4-year-old unprovoked, or gnawing off a baby's genitals. Meantime if any of us felt like it we could have been posting multiple serious pit attacks daily.

One huge problem imo is that dog owners are not legally held accountable for the bad behavior of their dogs. The law should be that if a dog seriously injures a person, the owner can be charged with felony assault. If the injury is less severe then the charge is misdemeanor assault. As it stands now, a dog can maim a poor little kid and the worst that will happen is the dog gets put down. The owner might get a slap on the wrist fine.

Agreed. But the law should only apply to dogs with locking jaws.

got to nit it up there a bit: there are actually a few cases of non-pits killing and/or eating a baby's junk -- google something like dog mauls baby dirty diaper. The question is whether or not you consider a dirty diaper attack unprovoked, but it is like baby killing crack to dogs apparently. I have some vague memory of like a dachshund doing this too, not sure though.

Some studies have shown that pit bulls are more of an aggressive, violent breed than wolves and foxes, and based off personal experience I believe it 100%.

Grunch:

The main problem is the owners, but that having been said pitbulls are still naturally more aggressive and dangerous than most other breeds because they've been bred that way.

Like others have said; it's a lot of moron owners who just want a gangsta dog. Shame, because pit bulls are awesome dogs. Nice people usually get labs; d$%kheads usually get pits. Some maulings happen. Result: 1st level thinkers thinks pits are nasty dogs.

PS: I have a lab. I would own pit bull in a flash tho. Friendly, easy going, sociable, athletic. They just have the wrong owners a lot of the time - sad to say for everyone
