Actually you don't know what you are talking about. Specific breeds are called purebred dogs. Everything else is a mixed breed. He did not say they were purebred. You assumed that's what he meant.

LOL, which is exactly why people don't like them. It's a trigger mechanism to attack. You don't have this problem with golden retrievers and black labs.

I know that some evidence says to the contrary, but I kind of agree that Pit Bulls are at least a little meaner than some other dogs of similar size. I LOVE dogs and am not scared of them at all, but I've had several run ins with pit bulls that just scared me senseless. All kind of similar situations to the one in the OP. They just never seem to give warning before they go ape ****, as opposed to pretty much any other breed I've been around. Maybe they're just more...instinctive...or something.

Some major differences in behavior and physical attributes though. Doberman's yap a lot, and they are frisky. Pitbulls just sit there with that icy stare, then start stalking until they can get close enough to bite. I've walked past a pit bull when I was walking a little dog - and the pit bull just sat there like it was completely disinterested. Then I turn around and it's very silently trying to creep up on me from behind - to eat the little dog basically.

The doberman that bit me was just an unruly adolescent basically. Also he bit and let go immediately. A pit bull probably would have been clamped to my leg until someone could pull it off, if not go for my throat. Pit bulls are a hell of a lot stronger and harder to control than a doberman. And their bite strength has to be orders of magnitude stronger. That head is just a giant block of muscle.

ya, dobermans where the dogs that we were scared of when we were kids, I dont think anyone had pitbulls in the 80s but EVERYONE had dobermans

How are you going to ban a breed of dogs when you have no way to measure what that dog is?

Regardless, there's definitely definable characteristics. Whatever qualities you can point to and say 'ok now that's a pitbull', you could also use to ban them.

Perhaps there's a reason for that?

pitbulls have been bred for ferociousness towards other animals.

they are very good at killing wild hogs, other dogs, cats and sometimes even humans

and that is because that is what they have been B-R-E-D to do.

Suzzer,

How do you know it was a pitbull? There's already been talk about purebred pit, etc, in the thread, but you haven't addressed it. You walked past a car with a dog, and then later returned and I guess put yourself in a dog fight, but how do you know the animal was a pure pit? It was probably mostly German Shepherd or Dalmation, because those breeds are both more dangerous than Pitbulls.

Saying that Pitbulls should be licensed like bazookas is really stupid because even a Downie can tell the difference between a bazook and a revolver, whereas you can't tell the difference between a purebred pit and a mixed breed even if it bit you in the face, which most of us wish it would have.

Why not allow people to walk lions down the street?

You guys that have had run-ins with pit bulls and experienced them behaving in a way that would scare you:

Try to be honest and really think back. Were you scared of it before it did anything to give you a reason to? If so that changes everything. If you walked passed it and gave it the same energy as you would if you walked past a chihuahua then it probably wouldn't have even noticed you.

any dog big enough to do damage should require a license (in areas of high population density. rural laws can be a lot more lenient)

the strongest, most aggressive breeds should be the most difficult to acquire a licenses for.
you should have to prove to the state that you are in a position to care for it responsibly.

once you acquire a license, owners should be obligated to pay annual licensing fees that are estimated based on periodic evaluations (ie: every 2 years), coupled with their designation (ie: guard dogs carry a higher fee since they're at a higher risk to do damage to the community).

then - in the case that a dog goes "psycho", the victim can be compensated by the government based on a fair evaluation.
and it will be financed by the insurance revenue collected.

bing.

i've never owned a dog, but my favorite 2 that buddies/family have owned are pits.

very loving dogs.

i expect the thread and/or responses will dispute this, but that's my experience even with other dogs. very, very loyal to the owner. i've never seen a pit bull 'go off', and i've been around lots, even a couple that weren't treated right.

seems like they get a bad rep because they're big...i've had more problems with little yippy dogs in my experience.

Arguments like these are all just quasi political arguments anyway.

If pit bulls are raised correctly, they aren't likely to hurt anyone. But the average person who owns a pit bull is probably not raising them correctly, and lots of idiots raise them to be mean.

Along the same lines. Most of 2p2 is going to support the right to bear arms. Obviously smart, responsible people should be able to carry/own a gun if they so choose. The problem is with gang bangers, and other ****ing morons who don't know how to use them.

Whether you believe either one of the current sets of rules is correct, is completely up to your own ideology, and usually has absolutely nothing to do with the actual topic at hand.

it is pretty much the same way that golden retrievers are selectively bred to run up to strangers and lick them. (although there is a rise in golden retrievers biting people. this is due to irresponsible breeders who onlyh care about making a quick buck)

pitbulls are a timebomb waiting to go off.

owners can def contribute to the problem tho
I know 2 diff people that have been breeding Pits for over 20 yrs. Neither of them have had any problems with their dogs when they're in a home with people that raise the dogs properly. The only times they've had problems with their pups was when the people raising them were ******s and wanted aggressive dogs.

Wow one stupid point after personal attack after another. Barely making sense the whole time. Well done.

It wasn't a fight it was one happy little mutt getting mauled by a pit that flew out of an open car window in about 1 second to attack it.

Sounds like you wouldn't have even tried to help the other dog. "Hey it's a dog fight, let them duke it out." I'm going to guess you're one of those macho/insecure guys that wouldn't be caught dead with a non-badass dog.

Go **** yourself and welcome to my ignore.

I didn't even know what Pits looked like for the longest time, so I definitely didn't put off any kind of vibe. I've had two bad run ins with them. One involving another dog(it basically ate it). The other involving a person(took 3 of us to get it off, we were using a baseball bat). Neither time did we pay any attention to it whatsoever, and neither time did it give us any kind of reasonable sign that it was about to freak out(no barking, growling, etc).
