This article lists other preferred breeds used for producing fighting lines.

At the risk of sounding like a nit, you are moving the goalposts here.

Yeah that is nitty but the change in term was not back pedaling, just a lack of precision. My fault. Use curb in the second post for consistency. A ban may disrupt dog fighting temporarily but people fight other dogs, birds, pigs, horses, fish, beetles, each other, prisoners probably any other animal they can force to do it. Pit bulls are not the key to stopping (or curbing) the behavior.

Howard, I'm unsure of your politics & whether you're a fiscal conservative or a libertarian. But assuming reported attacks (which I'm sure is a gross understatement of the actual total pit attacks) tracks with prosecutions then your pitbull prescription would result in hundreds of prosecutions and incarcerations per year, not 10 to 15. Plus, we don't even know if it will be effective.

GGoreo gave stats earlier in this thread about Ontario's ban on pit & pit mixes and at least that seems effective.

I'd ask you to reconsider the carceral remedy for this on that basis that it will result in less not more government intervention in our lives because it would certainly result in more. It seems to me like your philosophy is not actually for less government but rather that people should be allowed to do whatever they want until they prove their irresponsibility?

Fair points. But taking all the maimings and deaths, we’re looking at 1940 prosecutions in 31 years, or 62 per year. So while my numbers are off, they are not near the hundreds per year that you suggest. But to your broader point, this is a close one to me and my objections to a pit ban are slight.

I’m libertarian rather than conservative.

Howard,

If I was you my main worry would be that after pit bulls were banned they would work through the breeds until they reached GSD!

Normally, Rexx, I agree with the slippery slope arguments. But here, the stats on pits are so much higher than other dogs that it doesn’t concern me much.

Rather than establish an ex ante ban, set up an ex post remedy that establishes a significant deterrent to owners who raise dogs that end up being violent, and apply it to all dogs so as to avoid debates about the exact definition of a pit.

I’d probably support solutions like this in a fair number of similar circumstances, the idea being that keeping responsibility with the person in control of the situation will act to reduce the number of bad decisions made.

Why should I have to LOSE most of the fingers on my hand because a pitbull ripped the tendons off?

Oh yea they get jail time, great, man thats so good, oh wait i dont have any fingers...

Yeah, this is why a complete ban and total destruction of this ****ing evil breed needs to happen. More provinces and countries need to follow suit.

That guy left his pit alone with a child and an old person, the two things we've learned itt that you should never do with any dog.

He should have rubbed the kid on an old person to get him scented up before he used him as bait in the bite test. Ldo.
