Dunkirk Dunkirk

I searched for a thread on this movie but I didn't find one. Do we still do movie threads? Whatever. I'm doing one! This movie looks incredible. Nolan movies are always a must see for me and this one looks like it could win all the oscars.

It comes out next month and I'll probably see it opening night.

it sure does come out next month...

of special note when you see this movie, please pay special attention to the fact that it's filled with Practical Effects. it can be clearly seen in the trailer... superb!

Tragically I'm old enough to remember the filming of Battle of Britain in the skies over my head in Hertfordshire in summer 1968. We lived not far from one of the airfields used by the producers' private air force (which was larger than many national air forces at the time).

Once my mum was pegging out washing in the back garden and sixteen Me109s (strictly Spanish licence-built Hispano Buchons, flown by actual Spanish fighter pilots, but in Nazi markings), thundered over at about 50 feet. That was a Practical Effect all right. My mum ducked. On the other hand my brother's big black rabbit Mungo, hopping round the lawn, just looked at the things and went back to nibbling grass, not bothered.

I think they only used a handful of real planes for Dunkirk, but you can't argue with Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance. I hope it turns out OK.

So it's yet another movie where Tom Hardy has most of his face covered?

That's how you know it's him.

I hope this baby was one of the aircraft Nolan used for the film.

http://www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-sp...lmost-50-years

She was shot down on her first sortie over Dunkirk, but force-landed on the beach and the pilot escaped back to England -- and she'd already destroyed a Junkers 87 Stuka. She was eventually reclaimed from the sands in 2000 and restored to flight.

I also hope the film gives proper credit to the RAF for the success of the evacuation. Churchill was expecting to save at most 30,000 men. But the RAF's air cover allowed over 330,000 British and French troops to be brought to England to fight again. The pernicious myth that 'the RAF weren't there at Dunkirk' (simply because a Spitfire at 20,000 is invisible from the ground and in any case our fighters were mostly intercepting the enemy a few minutes' flying time but many miles inland) has persisted despite Churchill's speech to the House on 4 June, when he said this:--

Quote:
We must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations. But there was a victory inside this deliverance, which should be noted. It was gained by the air force. Many of our soldiers coming back have not seen the air force at work; they saw only the bombers which escaped its protective attack. They underrate its achievements. I have heard much talk of this; that is why I go out of my way to say this. I will tell you about it.

This was a great trial of strength between the British and German air forces. Can you conceive a greater objective for the Germans in the air than to make evacuation from these beaches impossible, and to sink all these ships which were displayed, almost to the extent of thousands? Could there have been an objective of greater military importance and significance for the whole purpose of the war than this? They tried hard, and they were beaten back; they were frustrated in their task. We got the Army away; and they have paid fourfold for any losses which they have inflicted.

Can't tell if Nolan takes himself seriously anymore. He casted Harry Styles lol....

Oh well, this can't be worse than interstellar or can it.

You didn't like interstellar? I thought that movie was amazing. What didn't you like about it? Thought it was very well done.

And I don't even know who the hell this harry styles guy is so I guess I won't have a problem with him in the movie

I am also in the minority group that didn't like Interstellar. I found the whole event horizon space time relativity 4th dimensional whatever to be a tired rehash of sci-fi tropes that I've already seen far too many times in bad genre fiction.

eta: Dunkirk looks to be a very different sort of Nolan movie. It's not a head twister like Memento, Prestige, Inception or Interstellar, and it's not a comic book. I'm pretty curious to see what he does with a very straightforward, real world history plot.

I mean, at this point literally everything has been done before. There is hardly anything original coming out these days. There has been a million ww2 movies as well. Dunkirk is yet another one. Nothing original there. I mean, certain cliches I'm willing to look past and enjoy the movie for what it is. I'm sure Dunkirk will be no different for me.

Well, if it's anything like Dick Lester casting John Lennon in How I Won the War, we're in turkey territory, but with any luck it's not that bad.

Sweet Baby Jesus, it's even more embarrassing than I remember. The Sixties were great, but... uhmm... they weren't necessarily all good.

Big chunks of it seemed really stupid.

Hopefully he doesn't just try to make another Ryan's Privates, and fail.

Generally I'm of the opinion that abstract things like Movies/Music can't be overrated or underrated as opposed to something like a sports team. But if I had to pick one movie that I think is extremely overrated it would be Interstellar without a doubt. The last ~45 minutes were just utter garbage imo and the conceit just made me eyeroll.

Harry Styles is the lead singer of a teenage boy band, not sure if he's even acted before.

Interstellar was a disappointment, compared to Nolan's other films.

Is it common for movies to be released in very different aspect ratios for IMAX vs regular theaters? Seems pretty bad honestly, they'd have to think about how both aspect ratios would look in the shot or, more likely, neglect one or the other (or both)

Sadly it seems N3200 was not one of the three Spitfires that Nolan used for the flying sequences. Those were Mk1a AR213, Mk1a X2650 and MkVb EP122. (A MkVb looks like a 1a if you take the massive 20mm cannon armament off.) AR213 was restored to flight in the 1960s to appear in Battle of Britain. Seemingly all three fighters, though British-based and registered, belonged to the American billionaire Toyota dealers Tom and Dan Friedkin. (Tom sadly died a few months ago.) Their father was a Royal Air Force pilot during the war.

In the film, the Spitfires wear fake serials (which were in fact assigned to Avro Ansons) and fake 'LC' squadron codes to avoid identification with any real Fighter Command squadron, but they were carefully dressed with the correct 1940 canopies, three-stack exhausts and the black-and-white underwing paint scheme peculiar to the Battle of France and Battle of Dunkirk.

Nolan also used one Buchon masquerading as an Me 109. The fighters made up to 12 sorties a day during filming. They are supplemented on screen by large-scale r/c models.

He hasn't, no. But he auditioned and the director liked him for the part. 'Stunt casting' can be a bad sign, but the director also cast Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance and Cillian Murphy, all serious players. The movie could still be terrible, or merely meh, but it doesn't seem the director was just mucking about.

Not to mention that the casting of Styles will appeal to some of the younger generation and make them at least consider seeing a film they normally would not. I, like many middle-aged guys, have zero clue who he is and therefore his casting won't influence my opinion of the movie one bit.

No, regular movies shown in IMAX are usually just the regular version all blown up huge, and maybe cropped? So it's idiotic, it's like someone with a huge "home theater system" projecting a regular DVD and being all proud of himself. The "correct" experience in those cases is a regular theater. It's very rare that a movie is shot specifically on 70mm or IMAX.

In this case I guess the IMAX 70mm is the "real" thing, which is annoying. Nolan is likely conscious of framing it properly for other formats too though.

EDIT: So the "aspect ratio" portion of the question I'm unclear on. I'm not sure if Watchmen in IMAX is cropped, for example. The directors are almost certainly "neglecting IMAX" in cases like that.

Could be it was just shot in IMAX and downconverted for ordinary screens.

Because true 70mm and iMax (two diffevent things) are a cinematic experience/event.
The smaller formats will still look exceptional because reducing the size of an image also has the effect of making it appear clearer and more resolved. But yes, anything not seen in iMax will definitely be cropped.

Unlike hateful eight, this showing appears to be even more exclusive. If yyou're in a market that has a theater showing it in film or large format iMax and you don't go see it, ef U.

Never actually seen anything in IMAX because I thought I would be disappointed after seeing Omnimax at Caesars before they tore it down. TBH I probably can't watch Omnimax any more anyway because I get occasional bouts of vertigo and Omnimax would surely trigger it.
