Re: Should cigarettes be illegal?

My wife was just in Cyprus. She said having people smoke in the office (and they all smoked) felt very strange.

Countless studies have shown this has absolutely no affect on smoking or any other area where its applied. Fear based motivation seems like it should work "Well show them horrible pictures of STDs, no one could want to have unprotected sex after that!" but it just doesn't.

I dont think people care about second hand smoke for health reasons, its because that **** stinks and its insidious as ****. Sit next to a smoker and hours later you can still smell that **** on your clothes, and its incredibly unpleasant. You just don't realize it because your are a smoker so you are literally incapable of noticing that smell at that level anymore.

Re: Should cigarettes be illegal?

I used to have to travel to Beijing for a project. The work day consisted of being locked up in a smoke-filled board room for 14 hours with everyone chain-smoking continuously throughout the day—except for yours truly. ****ing brutal.

On the euro-vacation cigarette smoking front, another post-middle-aged-euro-hag has lit up out on the terrace. Oh well, at least she gets to enjoy the fresh outdoors.

Ugh. So ****ing disgusting.

The difference is that sitting beside some slob sipping on a Big Gulp doesn't ruin my experience... well, as long as he doesn't make loud slurping sounds or spew his soda out through his nose.

Most of the time I would think this would be an experience enhancement.

You know what I hate OP?

When I'm at the beach or park and some big, fat family sets up shop next to me with the big, fat mom and dad and the morbidly obese 8 year old and 10 year old that weigh more than a grown man. Just sitting there with all their rolls and disgusting crevasses.

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking costs society about $193 billion a year. This includes $97 billion from loss of productivity due to illness and premature death, and $96 billion in smoking-related healthcare costs."

Lifetime healthcare costs for a smoker are $45k smaller compared to a fat and $91k smaller compared to thin and healthy people

Lol at loss of productivity from premature death. People generally don't continue to earn wages after death.

Putting quotes around something does not make it a valid citation.

cant tell if you are trolling or not, but when someone dies and the work they were doing isnt being done, there is a financial cost associated with that.

Some might go vape or whatever, but most won't. It's important to recognize that part of it when weighing solutions.

Quick glance, but you can get a 2-week nicotine supply of patches for like $25 if you paid retail, which gets you three packs of cigarettes where I live, and there are means to get nicotine treatment patches and other stuff free if you want. Comparable nicotine dosage, with no mess, no smell, no having to go outside (etc). Yet with all the obvious price, health and social advantages, people still smoke.
Are we sure that these things give you as much nicotine as cigs and as quickly? Maybe they need to invent something that gets into their blood stream faster. You really think the physical act of smoking is that important and not just a preferred delivery system because it is stronger/faster?

Is it really so difficult to wrap your head around the concept that most smokers find the act of smoking to be enjoyable? I have a jug o' fairly high strength nicotine solution right next to me. I have pretty good quality ecig gear. I can pump as much nicotine into myself as I can handle, quickly. I still miss smoking, because smoking is a lot more fun than vaping.

Do you pretend your Don Draper or Humphrey Bogart every time you light up? Can you describe why you like the feeling so much?

Re: Should cigarettes be illegal?

If I was a hipster working on my novel in Paris with really cool friends who had an affinity for jazz music than maybe smoking seems cool. I am from the south so I have very little romanticism about smoking. I associate it primarily with white trash poverty (which is sorta what I grew up in and wanted to gtfo of) and my parents smoked - it was ****ing torture.

I haven't lit up in a very long time so you'll have to direct your sanctimonious snark elsewhere. I though that was somewhat implicit in my posts.

The feeling? Of nicotine? There really isn't any to an addict, only the feeling of its absence. You still seem to be struggling with the fairly simple notion that many people find the act of smoking to be enjoyable. How do you think an entire culture of tobacco developed in the first place? You think half the country was smoking in the 50's because they hated it?

I think you should go buy a pack and give it a try. See what you're missing out on.

Can you explain why the act of smoking cigarettes is more enjoyable than taking nicotine in another form as you alluded to?
