Should cigarettes be illegal? Should cigarettes be illegal?

Smoking is illegal where I live (Manhattan Beach, CA) except on your private property, in a moving vehicle or in up to 20 percent of hotel rooms.

I hate smoking, but I think that's overkill.

Not inside offices, stores, parks, or having smokers clustered around doorways is sufficient. The beach would be ok except for the litter.

Cigarettes should be illegal because I don't like anything about them.

I think to make it illegal won't work. What works is to shame the crap out of smokers, judge them, make fun of them, point them out to children as dumbies, tax them and generally be super condescending to them.

I mean...... I understand that that is a vice that is hard to break. But the minimal requirement should be that when there are people around you, who can't take a step back to not inhale your smoke, don't light your cigarette.

I hate second hand smoke. I hate it when I am waiting for the bus and a dude lights his cigarette in a bus shack. I hate it with passion!

Doesn't seem to be working and sometimes I accidentally catch a glimpse of those disgusting pics. I moved to France recently and it's impossible to enjoy a terrasse to have a beer without a minimum of 2 douches blowing smoke on everyone there. It's also prevalent in stadiums. Last stats I saw showed that smoking rates in the USA are slightly higher, but I think the difference is that there are tons and tons of teens and 20/30 somethings in France who casually smoke whereas in the USA there are far fewer smokers, but those that do are often the pack a day+ types.

Obviously people should be able to do whatever the **** they want as long as they're only harming themselves, but once you smoke in public, you're doing harm to those around you and in general ruining some people's enjoyment just so you can slowly kill yourself.

In the UK they have been putting the ****ed up pics on the front for years now - last year (maybe before) they made the decision to completely hide cigarettes from display in all shops, I'm also pretty sure they have to have blank packaging.

I'm OK with smoking in a couple of select scenarios:

Outside in a 'smoking area' in a club/bar - I understand people like to have a smoke to chill with their drink and I'm fine with that.
In their own home.

But in most other public spaces I'm not really OK with - since having a kid last year I've noticed a lot of people's blatant disregard for my baby and smoking around it.

We were recently sat on a beachfront with my kid in his pram/stroller and someone cam along, sat right next to him and lit up. The wind was blowing in my childs direction and fumes were going directly into his pram.

We moved the pram to the other side of us, but obviously we were still getting a face full of smoke, so we moved. At no point did he even notice it was a problem.

I just can't believe people would think like that...

It works not on the characteristic but on the action. For example ridiculing going to McDo and emphasizing how only people who don't care about their health and food taste are doing it totally works.

McDo tastes great!

Also, I see no reason to not treat people decently and respectful independently on whether they smoke or are fat

I remember sitting in the rows right in front of the smoking section. It was awful.

It can totally work on poker players, too! They contribute nothing to society so it's a great idea!

Or we can just live and let live so as to avoid throwing stones in glass houses.

Thing im down to knowing of one person that actually smokes cigarettes. Lol smoking. Lol cigarettes. Shaming/ostracizing definitely a good tactic.

That's possible. However, if there's big taxes on it people will do it less often. And that's a win. Also, it seems like getting fat on non-processed foods would be tougher than getting fat on processed foods. I'm not a nutritionist though.

I don't hate smoking and I actually think your town has it right. In my opinion, feel free to do whatever you want in the privacy of your own home. Just don't do it where it could be a problem for other people. DC has that approach to weed: OK in your home, no good elsewhere.

Poker players already are taxed.

I'd rather sit next to a smoker than...

Screaming child
Someone talking on their phone for an extended period
Someone with bad BO
Loud drunk people
Loud sober people

Meh, I'm a smoker and I can honestly say I put the effort into not blowing smoke in the immediate vicinity of people who aren't smoking. I think if someone outright tried ostracizing me because of it though, I'd probably laugh at them and then blow smoke in their face.

I find it weird people are so crazy about second hand smoke though, as if it's going to kill them. Surely the thousands of cars, buses, motorbikes, etc that they walk past every day are doing far more damage to them than someones cigarette.

While I appreciate the effort, it's kind of hard to get away from the smoke/smell no matter what you do. But as long as you aren't blowing it in my face and it is allowed in that place I've got no issue with you smoking.

It's not going to immediately kill them, it's just completely ****ing disgusting

Smoking was so prevalent in the 70's. I remember when I entered high school that it was a "senior privilege" to be allowed to smoke in homeroom!

That's way down on my list TBO. I just find it to be a weak-ass, pathetic, disgusting habit with zero redeeming qualities.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Ugh.

I'm in euro-land on vacation enjoying a beer and 2+2 on the terrace for the past hour... but then some ****ing old euro-hag had to choose the seating area beside me to light up and flow her obnoxious cancer-stick-smoke my way for the past 30 mins. She finally finished up and went inside. Her sole purpose was just to ruin my outdoor experience. Thanks euro-hag-*****... for nothing. Ugh.

I'm totally against smoking but taking it away seems like overkill. If that was done you're just asking to create an underground black market for them which won't be taxed. That's the issue now, if you make them so expensive then you likely create a black market.
