The more people that come and see those awesome old food pics, the better.

Some pretty great stuff hope you and the kiddo eventually make a similar trip.

I’ve lived in Houston for 16+ years and for years thought Texas BBQ was over hyped. Houston BBQ scene was bad. I think few years back I think with Franklin’s and similar places getting big we started seeing good central type Texas BBQ. Changed my life. I’m also sadly never done a proper trip to Lockhart and other strongholds of Central, TX BBQ, that will be corrected. I think a coworker and I stopped into Smitty’s like 15 years ago but I was like mew because they didn’t have sauces up pulled pork.

Wait, it's actually called "Throwed" Rolls? Holy hell, that tilts me to no end.

Yep, and like Wall Drug or any other tourist trap, there are billboards reminding you of that fact for many miles in any direction.

Have not stopped, so can't comment on whether the food is good enough to put up with that silliness.

Ambien isn't going to be much help tonight, so, just raise the bottle, fill the pipe, look at some awesome old food pics, and toast Papa RoundGuy!

I think he would approve.

He looks like the kind of guy I would have really enjoyed going on a food tour with. Lucky you.

I have raised my glass!

Been a tough time, now dealing with all the bullshit. Seems like it's going to last forever, but it will get done.

This thread was pretty awesome though.

Inspired by the epic RG and Pappa RG road trip I'm making an overnight trip to Lockhart this Friday. Goal is to hit up the holy trinity, Kreuz Friday night, Black's Saturday morning and Smitty's for an early dinner.

Assuming I don't get flooded out by Beta Storm I'll be there Friday night and Saturday. I'll take pics. Staying at a $50 motel and intend to spend more on whiskey and cigars while at the motel than the room itself and significantly more on BBQ. Would've actually camped by campsite is full.

Were you here when Jethro''s BBQ opened up in the Drake area? Freaking amazing.

I love a good St. Louis thin crust, but it must use Provel cheese, otherwise it's just another pizza.

My pleasure.

Do you still recommend Jethro’s BBQ?

What was your favorite single item on the menu there?

Thanks.

I am honored that you're making the Lockhart trip with the thread in mind. Pappa RG is gone, but the thread will survive.

Please post your pics of the weekend. I'm especially interested in your opinion of Kreutz, since we didn't get there, and how you think it compares to Smitty's and Black's.

I haven't eaten at the original Drake area Jethro's in years, but I've eaten several times at the Ankeny location where my kids live. It is awesome.

My favorite is always the beef brisket. I ask for the "point" if available. It usually always is, and it seems that I get a double portion! But you have to like the fatty pieces, which of course I do.

Thank you. I'm pretty sure Pappa RG is smiling down while eating St. Peter's perfectly prepared schnitzel.
