Like I said in the other thread they have guys you can have take you out to the best spots but its all marked and if you wanted you could kayak out with a friend tie off and deep water solo all day. Theres great spots super safe that you can boulder up as high as you could possibly want and just dive right off, rinse and repeat all day and have a ***** amazing time. Wish I were one of the rich mofos on MTVs cribs cause first thing id do is build a sick bouldering wall over my pool :P
I'm planning a trip to Krabi now to learn how to rock climb and all the above sounds absolutely perfect to me.

My mental plan is 3 wild nights in bangkok and then 7 - 10 days in Krabi doing the 3 day course and then hopefully doing 3 more days of it. Any recommendations on best session to go? Best place to stay if rock climbing was the priority? Best close place to stay if i wanted some night life too? Any school recommendations?

Many thanks

Awesome deep water soloing video.

Again, a bump to see if anyone has gone anywhere since the last bump. (or anything to add, pictures, etc)-

I've been to a few different places in the last year for climbing. I just got back yesterday night from my first trad trip...I am ****ing awful at trad leading (I did a 5.5 and had my friend follow who then checked my protection...not good). We climbed in Eldorado Canyon near Boulder, as well as Boulder Canyon and Vedauwoo in Wyoming (no pictures yet).

Here is me leading a 5.7 (lol) in Boulder Canyon-

Leading is alot different than top roping and something that can't really be felt until you do it. I'm still relatively noob at it and can only do easier sport routes.

I climbed up Pão de Açúcar in Rio, Brazil-

Climbed in La Paz, Bolivia-

Climbed in Cordoba, Argentina-

sooo...post your pictures/TRs!

I hurt my shoulder climbing this summer now I can't play Ultimate. Or climb. But Ultimate is more important.

actually that's not true. take a look at this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxqMTwx4LZM

grigris are just as safe as ATCs for lead belaying when used correctly. just like anything, it's as safe as the user is competent. it took me a very long time before I actually felt like I knew what I was doing with a grigri.

here are some books to check out:

a must-read for any new trad climber:

one book on climbing technique:

if you feel like reading some forums, go to rockclimbing.com and read everything by rgold. posts by jt512, angry, and cracklover are also pretty much 100% on.

Also if you wanna watch a movie about the best climber YTD, go watch King Line about Chris Sharma.
The high school I teach at does a Summer Academy, which is just for fun, no credit. Another teacher and I did "Physics of Rock Climbing." The other teacher brought in King Lines to show one day. I was in awe as were most of the kids. Definitely worth a watch.

I blew a tendon pulley 5 months ago and it still isnt 100% so I cant climb as hard as I would like, so this thread bump makes me sad.

I plan on spending this fall in Hueco Tanks (spent a month there last year) so hopefully Im back to feeling strong by then.

Hey there,

nice, a thread about climbing on a Poker forum. Indeed climbing is the nuts! I love it, do it 2-3 times per week in the gym in winter, and when the weather is good lots and lots outside... Was last weekend bouldering in Fontainebleau - man that place is great! - see picture below. Anyone else from mid europe here? Could meet and climb outside in summer, and discuss some pokerz, too :-)

Cheers, Esox.

Any experienced climbers in Austin,TX? I went on a climb for my first time last week and it was pretty awesome (the Barton Creek Greenbelt). I'd love to get a real climber as a mentor!

Yeah, indoor boulder climbing. That feeling of reaching the top is exhilarating. Lots of fun, but Goddamn the callouses....

I've been climbing for 18 years, pretty much all trad and ice. I'm not a great climber but love long easy alpine routes. Some of the places I've climbed:

- All over NH (Cannon, Cathedral, Whitehorse, Frankenstein, tons of other places)
- Colorado (Lumpy Ridge, Eldo, Boulder Canyon, Flatirons)
- WY (Vedauwoo)
- Utah (Little Cottonwood Canyon)
- Cali (Toulomne Meadows, J-Tree, Taquitz, Suicide)
- Alaska (failed attempt on Denali)
- Canadian Rockies (some easy alpine stuff)

I don't have any photos on this machine but I'll try to post a few soon.

Did some bouldering in J-Tree last summer, and even with hands calloused from heavy dead lifting on some bars with some really insane knurling the rock cut my hands to ****. The rock isn't the most stable on the planet either.

The rock quality at J-tree is very solid and high quality. If you want to find examples of unstable rock try Cannon Cliff, NH or just about anywhere in the Canadian Rockies.

Where you cutting up your hands crack climbing? If so, do you have a lot of experience with cracks? Lot's of time cutting up your hands crack climbing is a symptom of poor technique. I'm not trying to bust your balls. I still cut my hands up crack climbing because I suck at it.

Sharpest rock I've ever climbed is at Vedauwoo. Even with tape and excellent technique that stuff will tear you to shreds.

I did a week in Moab and in Colorado. TR/pictures to come within the next few days hopefully.

Jb, Vedauwoo was pretty gnarly. I found their routes to be pretty difficult but I didn't really find the rock to be THAT sharp. Maybe my results were varied (only spent 2 days there).

Just to make sure I'm not senile I Googled "Vedauwoo + sharp rock" and I'm definetely remembering it correctly. It has these little crystals that are stronger than the rest of the rock and as the rock erodes these crystals are left sticking out. They will rip your hands to shreds. Although I bet some of the popular routes like Edwards Crack are smoothed a bit by frequent ascents.

I agree with you that the grades are stiff - pretty much sandbags in a lot of cases. Plus the wide scares the crap out of me.

The place is just awesome to hang out at though. It seems to have a really spiritual feel to it, especially if you get into the backcountry a little bit. I get the same feeling at J-tree and really love just hanging out at those places drinking beers and watching the sun set after a day of climbing.

last summer during wsop i got up at 5 am and went to the kraft boulders and got some stuff in before the heat set in which was pretty sweet and way different than the rock im used to in the northeast. this summer im gonna be looking to go up to mount charleston (which should be manageable even in the summer no?) to do some sport climbing but will need a partner obv. if anyone is interested post in here and maybe we can have a whole 2+2 climbing day during wsop.

He didn't die free climbing, ironically it was faulty safety gear which killed him during a jump.

This free climbing looks way more fun then using ropes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MlRE...BE35F49F3C12E1
Anyone tried something like this?

I'm in Thailand right now and spent a month climbing on Tonsai beach, where they do daily excursions to go deep water free soloing. Its definitely a lot of fun, but it wasn't as wild as I thought it was going to. At least with my tour it seemed more about doing it just for novelty and not really to challenge yourself. Lots of easy routes where almost everyone would make it up to a certain point and then just jump off. Although one guy fell off sideways from maybe 20 feet up and the impact with the water cut up his back pretty good. The last route we did was a bit tricky and it certainly gets intimidating when you get pretty high up there and you have nothing to chalk up your sweaty hands with! But if I did it again I think I would try and find people to rent a boat privately, because I'm sure theres some better and more challenging spots than the ones the tour takes you to.

Currently I haven't climbed in two months now and I'm itching to get to N. Thailand and Laos to do some more! Also anyone ever climb at the Red River Gorge? I'm from Chicago so thats where I do most of my climbing. Sport climbing heaven!
