Yeah I’m really late to this one, I’ve been down the Norm youtube hole many times. Huge bummer, Norm was my spiritual animal. His stories with Artie Lange on Howard Stern where epic. His gambling in AC where he throws like $40K into the ocean, the Bob Uecker story, there NBA lightning bets, everything.

I just got his book from the library.

I read his book and was entertained, but I think it basically said somewhere that it was not 100% true, and I had never heard about any of the gambling stuff before, so I assumed those parts were all made up. Guess I was wrong!

You guys have to read and or listen to his book, it's ****ing amazing. I would suggest listening though so you get his delivery.

I was planning on doing my first open mic two weeks ago on the 14th. Then the news hit about Norm, so I had to go up. Norm is a hero of mine. I would stay up late on school nights with my older brother to watch Conan in my youth, I remember us both exploding with Conan on "bored". I'll never forget watching that live. We couldn't get enough Norm back then. He was kinda scarce even, especially after he was fired from SNL. And then for years he sort of went away, in my mind at least. Almost like I had forgot about him, but really, it was just that his content was hard to come by I think. That was until about 3-4 years ago when I started watching NML and became obsessed with him again. Re-watching old clips radio clips/talk show appearances on youtube (thanks I'm Not Norm). And now the internet is flooded with his legacy, which is awesome.

"He was comedy concentrate." (Normand)

I've watched every tribute clip and listened to everyone talk about Norm, but that might be the best summation of his talent. He was the purest stand up comic alive. He was so ****ing good at the craft that it was completely invisible to the audience.

When Norm was 19, he went out drinking/partying with his friends. He took a notebook to write down anything funny that came up in conversation to use as material. The next day, when he opened the notebook the only thing written down was "That was really funny." Which perfectly sums up his life, doesn't it?

Only about 50 pages in but damn, good stuff. A lot is obviously made up, like he says he grew up on a farm in a remote area but apparently his parents where teachers in Quebec City at a military base. Entertaining nonetheless.

this clip basically sums up what makes Norm the GOAT for me. his combination of smart, talented and not giving a **** is very rare

he got fired from SNL and basically sabotaged his career because he didnt give a **** and enjoyed pissing the network execs off (see clip above). he could have been 10x more rich/famous if he actually cared but that would have taken a lot of what made him so funny away. Norm has a huge cult following though and he will be like the movie office space where people will appreciate him more in 20 years than when he was alive.

I really should have initially named this "Norm MacDonald Tribute Thread." There's enough content for this to go on for a good while.

Larry King interview said his largest gambling loss was a 400k NFL moneyline bet. Also said if he could trade places with one person it would be trump (back when trump was running in 2016)

I can't imagine imagine for the life of me looking up to trump but macdonald was such a droll funny prick he was great

I got in the habit of calling Norm the funniest man alive these last few years in 2p2 posts. I guess that title will now rightly revert to the great Bob Newhart, and then pass on to Bill Murray in a few months/years.

Norm's comedy was the best, so smart and sharp that it made you feel like you could see the world a little clearer yourself in its afterglow.

Maybe not the place for this conversation but who’s the funniest comedian that’s passed? George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield?

For me, it’s Mitch Hedberg. Norm is a very close second.

Norm isn't in my top 10 for stand-ups but I'm confident he was the quickest and funniest person in any room.

Oh crap that’s terrible, RIP. Who would’ve ever put Artie Lange as last man standing between Norm and Bob Saget from Dirty Work.
