This. You somehow could count on he was there when you switched on your TV and surfed the channels.

This is where it gets heavy because regardless of what you think you literally ruin all those people's lives that were connected with you in a meaningful way and cared about you. Especially children.

End of soapbox, its just sad.

A hero of mine...his writings and shows are amazing...and he was such a champion of justice. A real gut punch.

I had never seen an episode of Parts Unknown, but just finished the West Virginia one. Ive recently developed a fascination with imagining myself in other people's shoes so to speak, and this show really delivered that, and lots of great food to go with it. I will be watching every episode I can.

What are the good episodes of Parts Unknown to watch on Netflix? I see he has 8 seasons and Netflix it taking it off in a few days. Won't be able to catch them all.

If you like food and travel watch the early seasons. The later seasons didn't focus on food as much, tried to get into more cultural stuff.

Sure. But it'd be better for people in general (especially for depressed and suicidal people) if he died wanking himself off than to know that a guy who seemed to have arguably the greatest job ever killed himself.

Maybe embarrassing for his family but definitely less demoralizing for society as a whole.

I understand, I live it without the film crew and editors. His was the only real reality show ever, experiment, laugh make new friends. His attraction was his absolutely genuine and kind disposition. Eventually, its possible to wake up baffled by acute loneliness and desperation. There is no explanation or need to watch or speculate, its a rodeo clown rear ending a saw horse.

Didn't watch his shows that much, but what I did see was usually interesting. Seemed like he always adored the local cuisine. Was there ever any dish he didn't like? Anyway, I like to think of him as working on another show, in a far different place, the only place that truly defines the term "Parts Unknown".

Hi Anthony,

Huge fan of your work.

How often do people see you in bars and offer to buy you a drink? What are the odds if we ever crossed paths you'd drink with a random fan?

When I first went on TV and I started going on book tours I was a guy who would literally drink anything. Fans would come up to me and offer me shots of tequila and I would actually drink them. I am still here and alive today because I don't do that anymore. If I took every offer of a shot or other substance that fans offer to me, I wouldn't have made it to 2008, much less to this year. So chances are, to be perfectly honest, you wouldn't see me at a bar. If you were to offer me a shot, I would probably politely decline. I know people offer those things with the best intentions but I'm a dad now. I'm the 60 year old dad of a 9 year old. I have to at least try to stay live long enough to get to the eye rolling stage of my daughter's life.

This entry in particular has just made me very sad.

What I don't get is why he didn't seem to make an effort to get help. I was reading that in one show, they were (somehow) talking to a psychiatrist and he made the comment "I just need to talk to someone". He had unlimited time and money to throw at help. Couldn't he at least have moved the needle from severe to moderate depression?

He probably did see professional help, the thing is about them is that they are not very good at their job.

What sucks is I have a friend who occasionally talks about suicide. He's definitely sick and I've plead with him to seek help but he claims he doesn't want to get put on emotionally numbing drugs.
This Bourdain suicide has affected him. What I worry about is my friend and people like him who see someone like Bourdain, millionaire, dream job, banging models, etc... And still can't deal with this sickness. So how the hell does some normal schlub just punching the clock for years stand a chance?

My sister works with mentally ill people and the stigma against mental illness prevents people from getting help until it's too late. We as a society really have to break that stigma and make it okay to talk openly about something as critical as this.

Like Huntington said, there's a lot that's unknown within psychology. Due to a lack of knowledge, people really don't have a frame of reference to determine who's a good psychologist and who isn't. Even if the person who a patient is going to is qualified and comes recommended, they may only be experienced using certain therapies and could end up wasting valuable time that patient can use getting therapy elsewhere if their therapy doesn't work.

It sucks because depression can be treated whether medically or through evidence-based therapy (or both). It's not a lost cause by any stretch.

there are a lot of ****ty psychologists too. I'd say probably even most of them are pretty ****ty.

I was lucky to find mine, another therapist helped me find her by doing a few sessions with me and making a rough estimate about what would work for me, and then referring me out.

call him out on this ****. seriously.

and those drugs aren't emotionally numbing. It's the same BS excuse I myself have made in the past and have heard others do too,

"I dont want to be dependent on a drug for happiness"

"I hear the side effects are really bad"

etc. etc.

If you are depressed and unwilling to try everything to manage your depression, maybe you aren't really that depressed. People have a mistaken idea about what meds do too - they're not a fix all. They're almost always designed to be used in conjunction with therapy. They alleviate the physical symptoms (lethargy, exhaustion) and lift your mood enough so that you can actually function long enough to help yourself. It's not a permanent thing and was never designed to be.

Personally I hated the way Prozac made me feel like a zombie.

"I know I should be feeling x right now, but I feel nothing. Like I'm a mannequin."

On others I've said I'll take the crying if it means I'm able to cum.

Zoloft was so bad my doctor has it on my allergy list.
