It's that the sweetnesst makes your body think it's s getting sugar even though you're not, so your body is triggered into releasing insulin, and when it is in this mode, it does not burn fat. It's the basic idea behind the whole doing low carbs/ketosis/intermittent fasting thing.
As a side, aspartame has all kinds of other health issues like raising the risk of certain cancers.
It's been super tough for me to cut down on. I don't drink much soda but I do drink about 4 servings (20 calories worth) of Crystal Lite every day, although I do dilute it. 4 servings is supposed to be for about 32 ounces of water, but I make it last for 120 ounces. I've been trying to find out just how much aspartame it contains so I can compare it to something like a Diet Coke, but no luck.
Edit: just did some research and found that a safe daily amount of aspartame is 3500mg. And considering a Diet Coke has only 200mg, Crystal Lite is probably fine.
