This is a terrific point. All my current middle-aged regrets are about the things I chose to NOT do. Many of the things I chose to actually do turned out terribly, but I don't regret any of them.
...but then again, as I just now tried to think of something I've done that I regretted, the first thing that came to mind was that time I fell for a petty scam, ignoring the advice of friends and family to not do it. I was about your age at the time, and certain I knew better than everyone else who had already been down that road ahead of me.
Second paragraph trumps the first: don't do this Palm Springs thing. I know you want financial independence from your parents, so just keep this in mind: you've been dependent upon them your whole life, because that's what kids do. When you get out of school, you'll get a good job, and achieve that independence you desire. You're almost there now--the preschool years are behind you, the elementary and high school years are behind you, and you've only got a few more years of college to go. Ride it out. They've supported you this long, and it seems like they can easily afford it, so let them support you just a bit longer. Focus on your schooling, make THAT your road to the financial independence you seek.
Oh, and "jizz soaked couch".
