Mobb Deep had a lot more then one good album, at least one classic and at least two other dope albums. Havoc, with help from RZA, changed what was the accepted New York sound from Jazz sample melodies (think: Premo or Pete Rock) to grimmy hardcore beats.

Mobb Deep has had huge influence on rap music, they just don't usually get credit for it (being ethered by Jay-Z and becoming G-unit flunkies certainly didn't help them).

Too Short

Mobb Deep (seriously, they had one good album and it wasnt even that great even tho it gets ridiculous love)
IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE - he seriously annoys the hell out of me. Like a rapper who tries to rap with deep thought but often completely butchers his point (which is often flawed anyway) and seems to just search for places to use long or obscure words just to sound "deep"

Gotta agree that the almost all of the rawkus collection is gold. I always avoided Jay-Z for some reason (childish hate) but now Ive been listening to all his albums I realise what Ive been missing. Wu Tang albums are great in spots (36 chambers, Forever, Tical, 4:21, OB4CL, pretty much all of Ghostface and GZA's solo albums and even Masta Killa). Also OP, please god pick up Gangstar stuff considering you're tastes.

I like what Ive heard of Brother Ali and Murs, gonna have to listen to more of them.

never heard anybody argue that the infamous isn't classic... are you serious?

shook ones pt 2 alone makes the album coppable.

Ok so I shouldve qualified that. I personally like the album but it doesnt come to close to classic FOR ME. I know its always considered a classic, and Im not gonna argue vehemently against that as I think this ONE album is good.

Hell on Earth was ok but not great imo and then everything after that (especially anything recent which is god awful) was incredibly suspect.

I guess Im not saying their terrible. I just dont get how they are SO highly rated, but I guess Im real picky with what I like. From that kind gritty east coast style I much prefer Wu Tang and early Bone Thugs.

Also BIG THANK YOU to everyone who suggested the Grouch's **** the Dumb. Listened to it today and its truly awesome. Gonna check out some Tech N9ne as well on the recomendations, Ive only ever heard his verse on the anthem.

I personally never liked it. Hey my dislike of them could be completely irrational and I could come around one day, as I said before I used to hate Jay-Z now I see how great he truly was/is (even if he bites just a lil bit too much).

FWIW, Havocs beats>>>>>Prodigy IMO. Although I wouldnt say hes on a par with the greats, hes a pretty solid beatmaker. In fact I think that if you replaced Prodigy with another MC that I would like the product much more. He just never really did much for me.

I didn't even know Prodigy made beats. And since I like Mobb Deep's beats, obviously its Havoc over P.

Sorry, I meant Havoc's Beats>>>>>Prodigys MCing.

Back to non Mobb Deep hip hop. I just realised that noone in this thread has mentioned BDP. Their first album and KRS's follow up are two awesome joints that everyone should hear. BDP, Road to the Riches and Long live the Kane are three of the best debuts Ive ever heard and all out the same era.

EDIT: I realise theyre the complete opposite of "new" which the thread is more about, but theres always the odd person who misses out on the true great old skool stuff.

nobody mentioned busdriver. fear of a black tangent owns.

People finally mentioned Jurassic 5, Aesop Rock, and Cunninglynguists... but seriously, pandora.com is the best way to be exposed to a broad range of artists in a particular style.

Another English hip hop fan here.

There's some good Bitish hip hop out there - DJ Format, Ty, Roots etc.

On the other side of the pond, I like Nas (Illmatic is still extraordinary after all this time), Blackalicious and Ugly Duckling amongst many others.

DJ Yoda makes some great mixtapes and these are pretty easily available on the net (try Pearson's Towers for some good mixtapes). His Esssential Mix one is particularly great. Also look out for DJ Magnet, DJ Soo, Dexter.

Solid Steel podcast has a decent hit rate and is worth subsribing too. If you don't mind funk and nu-jazz mixed up with your hip hop, Blackmarket funk also do a good podcast. The ney year's eve ones are especially great.
