I just typed out a long thing how the quality gap of "girl you stank" isn't even that wide compared to most current run of the mill mixtape tracks, but it felt too much like I was saying he doesn't suck that bad. He does. He's just not as big of an abomination as people make him out to be. Terrible guys who nail one catchy some come along all the time, it's not some atrocious new threat thats never happened before, it's just standard bad gimmicky music.

I've found that Ice-T comment weird since I heard it, single handedly destroying hiphop? C'mon. No one takes SB seriously. There are guys in the industry waaaaay more influential that constantly lower the bar that everyone follows and he thinks the guy who piggybacked off hiphop and made some money off a gimmick (which has happened many times before) killed the entire artform? Stick to SVU dude.

Killing hip-hop as in, he's making it difficult for high quality rappers to release material (seriously just drop a Budden album already ffs) because labels want to make Soulja Boy type money off of their releases.

Also, who are the influential rappers that are lowering the bar? Wayne?

idk, 50 Cent maybe...probably some others but w/e

i don't really care about all the soulja boy is killing hip hop, hip hop is dead stuff...i just don't listen to those artists. there are plenty of good underground artists around and good stuff gets released all the time.

People could argue relentlessly either way, I was basically talking about big producers, guys who become the figurehead of tightly and loosely formed groups of rappers, label pimps etc, these are the guys imo who have an influence on the broad curve that the industry takes, not the one hit wonder gimmick acts.

"Lowering the bar" was poor wording anyway as I think it's too relative to get bogged down in. When I wrote it I was pretty much referring to the "simple banger beats laced with mindless swagger" trend of the past few years that seems to get worse and worse, but that's not to say that some of it doesn't turn out to be fun music, and there's always guys that will take it and make it into something that hits the spot for you. Probably stupid to wish that the whole industry was made of deep lyrics and complex beats anyways, there will always be guys that will put that out, not worth stressing over, but I always end up doing it anyways.

And I'm not a hiphop snob by any means, as far as hiphop goes my playlist has basically been made up of Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, and Juelz Santana tracks for the past month.

why does everyone hate on these guys who are just out there trying to make money? yes it's music, no it's not hip-hop or rap, but why hate on someone out there selling records, getting famous and making money?

obv they don't belong in a "recommend me some good hip-hop" thread imo, but there's nothing wrong to listening to them and thinking they make fun music to listen/dance to.

game is probably my biggest guilty pleasure in terms of this genre.

I think it's just because it leads to a whole group of people who claim to be fans of hip-hop but list Soulja Boy, Dem Franchize Boyz, Plies(? I'm running out of really ****ty rappers that have made one hit wonders recently, I guess that shows how little attention I pay to them) as their favorite artists.

Jay-Z set hip-hop back more by not releasing Joe Budden (BKA That Dude) than soulja boys ignorant ass. You ain't ever gonna stop terrible music, but shelving something that could have been genuinely great and have possible commercial success is very uncool.

No, his next album is titled "Padded Room". He went to a real emotional style after Def Jam shelved him for so long.

I have absolutely no respect for SB, I don't care that he's making money...But I think it's stupid to hate on him. There has always been those types of acts in rap unfortunately so he's nothing new. What I do hate is that the industry is designed in a way that people can make money off having no skill relative to other great rappers with no album release dates. Or what I also hate even more is the fact that SB's A&Rs, label heads, managers, etc are probably eating off his success even more then he is.

Also it's very annoying to tell people you listen to rap and have them assume you mean soulja boy, Shawty lo, 50 cent, Lil Wayne, etc. rather then the tons of great rappers that have been mentioned in this thread.

Those rappers aren't even close to the same category as soulja boy imo.
