I've been listening to Hip-Hop for since I was 11 (19 years ago), but the number of tracks on my iPod from 2002 onwards is pretty minimal.

Basically a lot of the 'Hip-Pop' that seems to be out these days doesn't really do it for me. I'm from the UK and don't have music channels on my TV, and stuff that gets on the radio seems to be pretty mainstream.

I guess I'm pretty ignorant as to what is out there these days, and I know the U.S. has plenty more specialist TV and radio stations, so throw some recommendations my way - it seems there's plenty of Hip-Hop afficionados on 2+2.

I'm a big fan of East Coast stuff from the 90's - Das Efx, Mobb Deeps 'The Infamous' album, anything Redman, Jeru, Lords of the Underground, Black Moon etc etc,
From more recent years Mos Def, Talib Kweli ('Move Somethin' is the ****), Pharoahe Monch.

Also like a bit of French Hip-Hop, but know nothing about the scene - Kheops' 'Sad Hill All Stars' is awesome, and I've got a bit of Saian Supa Crew but that's about it.
And to any Kiwis out there, I've got King Kapisi's 'U can't resist us' which I love - he got anything else I might enjoy?

What I'm NOT looking for - Tracks like the recent 'This is Why I'm Hot' - I gather this was a big hit in the states? Makes me sad to think that this is what Hip-Hop has evolved to but, whatever, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

Oh, and no crunk.

Thanks in advance,

Baintz

If you really want to keep updated on new good hiphop, I would suggest downloading the podcast I listen to. I am 31 and had the exact problem you had. Most mainstream stuff now is garbage. Go to eastvillageradio.com and download a podcast called Fat Beats Radio. I think it's on Wednesdays sometime. There is a ton of good music on there. Click on schedule and you can look through all the different shows. You will have to create a username to access the url for your ipod.

Each show is broadcast out of a little storefront in NYC and each get their own 2 hours or so. Some of the other shows I listen to are "How Urban Radio Saved My Life" on Sundays, "Guilty Pleasure" on Mondays, "The Block" on Mondays, and "Forty Deuce Radio" on Mondays. It's like a half talk show half music show by one of the photographers that followed the Beastie Boys around early on.

Definitely check out Fat Beats Radio though. They not only have good new stuff but old stuff sprinkled in.

Black Milk is one of my favorite new artists. Check out his album. Rhymefest too.

Yeah I discovered Atmosphere when watching someones 'Skate' video on YouTube, liked him a lot. He sounds a lot like one of the Channel Live MCs.

Are Digable Planets still around? I remember them from the 90's, never had any of their albums though.

Will have to check out MF Doom and Brother Ali, not heard of them.

You should check out all three of kanye wests CDs. If you like talib and mos def you will mos def like kanye. The new jay-z cd is pretty sick imo. i would also recommend the carter l and the carter ll by lil wayn.e K-OS is very similar to mos/talib - his best cd is the joyful rebellion. super sick. For french mcs, MC Solaar is the best i think.

you should check out MF Doom and DangerDoom (collaboration between mf doom & DJ DangerMouse). the grey album done by dj dangermouse is pretty cool too...its a blend of the beatles white album and the black album by jay-z.

You should def check out Brother Ali.
"shadows on the sun" and "the undisputed truth"

I really liked Murs Cd with 9th wonder, Murs 3:16

Also, since you are a east coast guy, tell me you have Gangstarr "Full Clip"

Some more, Masta Ace "Disposable Arts" and "Long hot summer" (or something like that)

Also, you should get into some, if not all, of the Wu Tang solo CD's, especially Ghostface and the GZA.

I really like Apathy's "Eastern Philosophy"

You should also check out both of Immortal Techniques albums Revolutionary Vol 1 and 2.

Maybe I will think of some more stuff that stood out for me from 2002 and on that wasn't just radio BS. Kanye's **** is pretty good, but its so overhyped as well.

I will def check back in this thread because I need some new stuff to listen to as well.

Wanted to add that Sage, Atmosphere, and Doom are pretty garbage IMO.

Please elaborate a little more here, especially in regards to Atmosphere. Atmosphere always gets hate, but I never know why. The group has some of the best lyrics and beats I've ever heard.

Also, Immortal Technique is pretty ridiculous.

though I am a big Atmosphere fan and I also like MFDoom, it is pretty easy to see why people don't like them.

I listen to a ton of hip-hop, many different styles, and besides the ones I noticed people have already mentioned, for OP I would recommend:

J-Live
Little Brother
Common
Del tha Funky Homosapien/Deltron
Canibus
Jay Dee
Madlib
Sean Price
Cannibal Ox
Lupe Fiasco
Dilated Peoples
El-P
De La Soul
Ali Vegas
Saigon
Hi-Tek
O.C.
Cormega
A Tribe Called Quest

i'm tired of writing

Albums that have came out since 2002:

Fishscale and Big Dough Rehab by Ghostface
Mood Muzik 2 by Joe Budden
We got it 4 cheap vol 2 and Hell hath no fury by The clipse
All of little brother's albums (3 post-2002)
Game Theory by the Roots
Eardrum by Talib Kweli
Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco
Be by Common
Desire by Pharoh Monch

Just off the top of my head, if I think of something else notable that came out in the last 5 years I'll let ya know.

Brother Ali is sick. Check out his song "Forest Whitaker"

Dizzle and SaltCracka

Why exactly is it "easy" to see why people hate on Atmosphere? What about them sucks? Lucy Ford is a great LP and Seven's Travels is a solid album.

Also "Honest Expression"

Here is some Atmosphere. Skip to 4:40 for a killer little flow.

EDIT 353:

Try some Dead Prez. They're hardcore militant/racist but still really good. Radio Frequency is probably my favorite. Propaganda is also good.

Don't want to derail the thread, I just think Atmosphere is a lame ass emo rapper douche. There you go. I

Another vote for Hell Hath No Fury, Blazing Arrow, and Be. Good stuff right there.

Also, OP, you may like K-Os first CD.

Meh, even I have to admit that Slug's whole "whhaaa I miss Lucy, **** you Lucy" schtick is a little over-the-top and emoish. Good point. He raps about other stuff too, which is pretty good, but whatever.
