That song I have no shot of likley ever being able to play, but in my opinion, almost any Stones song is better than that one--even though that is a silly comparison.

My point is, difficult music isn't good music, in fact generally the opposite is true. The Beatles kick ass!

Great song, Bill Withers is awesome. I'd probably take "Ain't No Sunshine" or "Lean on Me" over this one, but its still great.

Not really. I actually think that both of those bands were better than The Cure, personally, but that's just my opinion. The most vehement defender of the Cure as an all-time great band is also a huge XTC fan, for what it's worth. I'd definitely rate XTC high, maybe #1, in a poll of the most -underrated- artists of my time (along with The Smithereens and Tricky), but that's a different subject for a different thread.

Radiohead: The best band of our time.

Title says it all, everyone has their own opinions though but let's be honest radiohead quite simply cannot be beaten if you are a person who thinks. If you are someone who sits there killing one hour to the next doing mind numbing **** 24 hours a day you probably like *insert current chart topping artist here* and think they are the best, but in reality you have no clue about life or music.

maxior i think when you open it up to the last 25 years that's a significant change because then you get GNR and also get both metallica and U2 when they were still good. i think a big reason it's not that close for me since 1990 (which was the arbitrary time frame i set earlier on) is that both U2 and metallica were waaaaaay better in the 80's.

i still like radiohead more than any of those bands but it definitely changes the scope of the conversation.

microbob, istewart said it basically the way i would say it regarding commercial success and broad appeal. i would also note that there were a lot of people who thought sabbath were awful and plenty of people hated pink floyd at various points (particularly the late 70's when punk was getting big; it was basically **** disco and **** guitar rock wankers at that point). i think the fact that there's not much dispute over them now is partially a function of them not being at the forefront and releasing albums, and partially general nostalgia. but still, they were probably more universally liked than radiohead just because music is so much more fragmented now.

as far as the cure as an 80's band, sorry, that's a bit of a misleading way of phrasing it, what i was trying to say (and this is more clear in the context of the whole paragraph) is that they were really only productive / seriously relevant in the 80's. not that they were a strictly 80's band, although i do think some of the production on their more commercially successful stuff sounds dated, the songs are definitely strong.

i think of the police as a tremendously influential and accomplished band, i really love their stuff, and even though i can see why it's not more widely played outside of the big hits, i think the way they helped lead the transition away from arena rock in the late 70's and open mainstream rock up to other influences (punk, reggae, etc) ... awesome. i put talking heads and the clash in that same category of bands that helped reinvigorate rock in the late 70's and early 80's, even though a lot of mainstream rock went back to sucking balls for a decade or so afterwards

regarding radiohead's influence, i mean, if you think of the biggest rock acts in the US and espeicially the UK since the late 90's, a bunch of them have ripped off radiohead. coldplay has made a career of it... muse have aped them to varying degrees ... other britpop bands as well. plus a lot of indie rock acts acknowledge them, or don't, but are still in their debt. look at all the things that have become popular among the indie crowd in the last decade and then count how many of them are present on kid a and amnesiac... kraut rock, post-rock with jazz influences, the synth / electronic resurgence, psych-rock, etc.

Not really. I spent about ~2-3 hours listening to them, and then stated my opinion. Also considering this fact this whole thread is just opinion based, there was nothing wrong with it. I never said people who listen to them are stupid or anything of the sort; I simply stated how I thought it was weird people considered them good.

Even after the fact, someone mentioned a CD of their that "everyone" should like. So I went ahead and gave that whole album a try. While a couple of songs were OK, I still had no urge to ever listen to them again. I didn't blindly come in here saying "DURRR RADIOHEAD SUCKS," I gave 'em a shot and they failed for me. Nice try saying my trolling is lame when you are the only one trying to insult someone ITT. Defensive much?

Also, nowhere near the age of 35. Try me being in college still. You are 0/2 in trying to insult me, would you like to keep going?

I was one of the guys that called them bland. I love the pre-experimental stuff, I think it's spectacular. I think the experimental stuff is bland: it's mostly just droning synths and atmospheric sounds with Yorke crooning quietly over them. Yeah, sometimes they break out the guitars and play songs that go somewhere (I liked "There There"), but yeah, I think most of it is boring. Not trying to troll.

i have, and i love mike patton, but calling any of his bands the best of even a given decade is pretty lol. when fans of really niche-y bands insist that their pet artist is the savior of all music it's almost as bad as meatheads who know nothing and insist that any band they can't hear 200 times a day on mainstream rock radio can't possibly be good. patton is an awesome vocalist but his songs, especially in bungle, can be very hit or miss, some of the stuff is just bizarre and not really held together by anything other than "hey it might be fun if we go from a grindcore breakdown to a quick polka here." it's one thing to be weird (generally i like weird) but i think great bands generally tie it together in some way. i'd love to hear anyone try to say that patton is a great songwriter with a straight face; he's a great singer, which is very different. half the time he is singing about totally random ****.

i think FNM is the best of patton's bands and they were hugely underrated, but not in the conversation about best of their time imo.

i'm not trying to be a dick here, but when i hear this argument it makes me think that you basically need someone to stomp on a distortion pedal and start yelling for you to feel like something is happening. radiohead find a lot of ways to build, climax and release in their songs without jamming it down your throat; i think this is one of their best qualities. and yorke is very expressive as a vocalist; he has some big dynamic swings over the course of many of their songs.

one of my personal favorites is 'sit down, stand up' off hail to the thief in this regard.... tremendous buildup starting around the 2 minute mark and when it busts open at 3:04 it's fantastic.

saying radiohead songs don't go anywhere is a really bad way to put it. they don't go where you want them to.

Mike patton fan as well but no way would I ever consider any of his stuff the best of any generation. He certainly seemed to underachieve given his talent and charisma.

Bands that should be up there with radiohead.
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
REM
NIN
U2
RHCP
Green day

Radiohead is certainly at their level.. But a good argument can be made that any of these bands are just as good.

Forgot to add metallica and aerosmith.
