I don't know who the best band of our time is, it is too subjective. I like Radiohead a lot, but I'd like to throw a couple more bands out for consideration:

Beastie Boys
White Stripes
Nine Inch Nails

+ all the bands mentioned earlier in this thread.

I'm willing to call Phish one of the all-time great LIVE bands. Their studio output is more pedestrian, but then again that's not what that band is all about. DMB, for me, is the ultimate example of a band being much less than the sum of its parts. The individual musicians are amazingly talented, but the band as a whole just doesn't work for me, except for a couple of the hits as catchy pop songs. When they try to do the improvisational thing live, Phish blows them off the planet.

So after reading this thread I've been listening to Radiohead on youtube trying to give them a chance.

WTF, I can' stand any of their songs. People consider them good?

There are people I know, who are in bands or very knowledgeable about music, that think that The Cure were the best and most influential band of the 1980s and early 1990s. I don't agree, but I will concede that there's an argument to be made there. They do seem to be the favorite band of most online and terrestrial radio stations that specialize in "classic alternative" music.

New Jersey, right? Jets fan already a fact. We just need to get some more insights into your "taste" and "knowledge" or "extent of trolling."

OP has sort of clarified his post stating that he's 21 and that "our time" is a post 89-90 kind of thing, while I might even go later (ie the band has to have had a solid album or two this decade). You can't say Springsteen, GnR or many others would qualify. Go to a concert for many of these and the average age is ~45 or maybe older. How does this qualify for "our time" or generation when that is about 20 years older then the average age on this forum?

As a hardcore music enthusiast I would say that even though they aren't one of my favorite, Radiohead is easily one of the best bands of our generation. Who is the best? I would have to say Phish.

These are good choices as well imo, at least far better than Metallica and U2.

New York, actually.

And it is my opinion that they are bad. I like how you want my "taste" and "knowledge" (in quotes obviously) about my "extent of trolling" when you are trolling.

I'll leave this thread alone. Have fun listening to this emo stuff though

I have...its one of Mike Patton's side projects, who as an individual artist and his bands combined, should probably be the winner of this poll.

How am I trolling? You went into a thread with no knowledge of the subject, to make fun of the fans/supporters of the subject. Your attempt at trolling was lame and have fun being a 35 year old Bruce/Jets fan.

Mr. Bungle would get like, 1.5% in the same poll conducted. They aren't near popular enough.

Nirvana and GnR are really the only two bands that have done nothing and next to nothing in over a decade and get over 20% in a poll like this. My Bloody Valentine might do alright as well, but even then, 5% would be pushing it. Anyone smaller has just faded into obscurity beyond the main fanbase to garner enough votes. I don't think it's fair or reasonable to be the best band of this time if you haven't put anything decent out for over a decade.

As is the vast majority of their music imo. I don't like them bar a smattering of songs from their back catalogue (mostly from the bends). They are not the best band of our time, they are not mainstream/diverse enough to appeal to that many people. Most Radiohead fans seem to celebrate this fact while simultaneously sneering at anyone who doesn't like them in my experience.

How do you define mainstream in an era where MTV doesn't play music videos anymore and AM/FM radio is near obsolete, while the CD barely sells?

I feel like a bit of a Philistine for not liking Radiohead but every time I try to listen to one of their songs I feel like a depressed mosquito has flown into my ear and is committing suicide in there.

Have you listened to The Bends? Its really just a very very good rock album. I can understand not liking their later stuff and even OK Computer, but I feel like most people would like The Bends if they just gave it a chance.
