Anyway, I don't dislike the song because it's too simple. I just dislike it. And I don't really think they like the song because it's supposedly so complicated. Rather, I think they like the 'feeling' of the song. They can't possibly care THAT much about the technical aspects.
Yeah, this is probably a result of having a thread discussing whether radiohead is the best. Seeing as everyone has a personal taste which is unique fans will be tempted to quantify 'good music' in some way. The easiest way is probably to argue is its unique, complex and theoretically sound.

so yeah..I find a lot of their songs bland but some are quite good....

Re: Radiohead: The best band of our time.

Radiohead have probably been the best band in the world since the release of OK Computer (prior to that pavement easy) which to be honest I find a bit depressing. Without a shadow of a doubt they have combined accessibility and innovation better than anyone else and release a stellar record every 3 years or so. I listen to them and I think ‘wow, this is pretty amazing’… but then probably never listen again for another few months or so.

The problem with their music is there is no joy, no humour, A lot of their music deals with the dehumanizing aspect of modern life, and well, they capture it so well that I hardly want to listen to their music because is has no life in it. Compare this generation’s greatest band to any generations greatest band, The Beatles. Their albums and songs captured so much emotion, at times incredibly playful and fun and equally innovative- life affirming in a way Radiohead or any other band could only wish to be. Listen to the second half of Abbey Road. Radiohead couldn’t come up with anything that joyous and silly and get away with it, which is why I think it is a bit sad that they are this generation’s greatest band, because no other band could either really.

FWIW David Berman, one of my favourite artists sums up what I think in a blunter manner: "You can go through the whole new Radiohead album and try and tell me what they're saying, and all you'll get over and over again is things are miserable, don't try, things suck. And it's all gray. There's nothing there. Never before has there been a 'greatest band in the world' who had so little to say about anything."’

Yeah, this basically sums my feelings up. They're a technically great band, and very innovative on the production end of things. That said, I have zero interest in listening to them, ever, b/c I find their worldview to so relentlessly dismal and bleak. Just can't get into stuff that has no sense of humor about itself or life.

Re: Radiohead: The best band of our time.

TimTim - I really wonder if that is possible.

I don't particularly care for their lyrics or world-view either. But I also kind of think that they could lyrically be deeper and/or more optimistic and I would still dislike them.

And I also think most of their fans (including the 2+2'ers) would still rave about them even with moments of shiny-happyness or just less dismal (and would perhaps even point to their variety in attitude as a strong point whereas currently they might say it's their consistency of view that is considered a positive attribute).

Re: Radiohead: The best band of our time.

This thread really does suck... Radiohead fans need to seriously take it easy and calm the **** down.

"best" is the key fing word here morons everyone with a brain should realize that their best and random idiot #467s "best" will not be the same. If OP is looking for the best according to OOT people clearly we have Radiohead at the top as no other band is getting as much love.

Truth is Radiohead sucks and the correct answer is the Baha Men. Prove me wrong fools.

Re: Radiohead: The best band of our time.

I like Pearl Jam and The White Stripes much more than Radiohead but that has more to do with me preferring slightly heavier guitar driven rock. I would consider those two in contention for sure but I have no problem conceding that Radiohead is the best of the past 20 years.

Also, don't argue with morons. 50 million posts of repeated stupidity won't suddenly turn into anything worth reading during this thread. It just gives us more irrelevant crap to skip over.

The more I think about the "best" band of our time, I am starting to more and more think its Tool, then followed by U2 and Radiohead.

Although I'm obv a big Radiohead fan, I agree that their downer world view is a liability.

Not really. Should we dismiss the whole metal genre because it isnt about sunshine and rainbows? Does Nirvana suck all of a sudden?

No, and neither does NIN. The point is all things being equal (talent, inspiration, etc.) who would you rather listen to, the artist who explores the light and the dark, or the one who spends all their time in the dark?

Their second album was great, their 3rd album was one of the greatest of all time, and their most recent album was arguably their second best. What other bands have there been recently (or ever for that matter) where the 7th album is on par with their early stuff?

Re: Radiohead: The best band of our time.

The Beatles' 7th album was Revolver, arguably the best album of all time, which was followed by another 3 or 4 albums also arguably the best album(s) of all time.

And my problem with Radiohead isn't just that their world view is bleak (as expressed in their lyrics) but the music is also very bleak as well. I still think their music is incredible but it is just too much of a slog to listen to daily for me

Re: Radiohead: The best band of our time.

How can one band that sounds SO MUCH like another mega-popular, highly influential, highly praised, and universally revered band, be the best band ever? Why wont anyone refute this argument? Explain it to me like I am 2 years old. They are good, but they are Generation Y's Pink Floyd. How does this make them the greatest ever when every song sounds like something floyd did 30 years ago?

first, nobody is saying greatest ever. and second, seriously, pink floyd were an influence, that much is clear, but every song they write does not sound like a pink floyd song. if you really want to defend this asinine position please find me a comparable pink floyd song for, say, the first 5 tracks of 'hail to the thief.'

But sersoulsy, if this was 1969 instead of 2009, would we all agree that the correct answer is The Beatles? Beacuase if that can reasonably be disputed there is no way we can even pick a favorite for "our time".
