Real sentences have this thing called capitalization. If you can't write correctly yourself, don't call other people out on it.

This is a terrible thread, people suck at dancing about architecture. Honestly, we're just declaring our alliances and calling each other douches.

this is like, exactly how people describe Radiohead.

in 3 years they went from OK Computer to Kid A. those 2 albums alone beat the originality and progression of most other bands

Mr. Bungle wins that discussion.

I can't believe I just posted in this terrible thread.

LOL wut? Don't get me wrong, all these are good bands/artist but top ten they are not. I'll concede a few on the list but some are just downright terrible to put on a top ten list.

As said above, I can't believe I posted in this terrible thread.

absolutely untrue - Exit Music has one of the biggest dynamic shifts I can think of in a rock song, ditto Climbing up the Walls, The Tourist, etc, c'mon

loooooool

I mean, in all seriousness, if you don't like noise and static and fuzzy, raw sounds in your tunez, then you don't like OKC or Sonic Youth or Jesus and Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine or anything like that I guess. I don't really get that, since OKC is one of my favorite albums and those are some of my favorite bands, but I guess it's okay. Just recognize it's way more likely that something good is falling on deaf ears than it is that you've exposed a bunch of frauds.

Did he ruffle your feathers so much that you thought that you would call him out on punctuation? Do you need a tissue?

Most being the key word here, but there are lots of bands out there that are just as "progressive" as Radiohead.

Ugh, I like Death Cab for Cutie more than most people I know whose taste in music I respect, but I attribute 99% of this to Ben Gibbard being a really good songwriter. As musicians I understand that they are mediocre at best. No way I can include them in my top bands of our time.

Well, hopefully I've alleviated some of the concerns that I just don't know music. I honestly can't tell where some of that stuff was coming from. You are pretty much the only person to respond to some of the bands I was mentioning (except for hamonrye earlier in the thread I guess).

I also don't believe that thinking RH sucks is as uncommon as you think.

You're observations of people that can't get into RH and SP I'm guessing are people who don't like as much indie overall. See what I'm getting at? If you're huge on Brittney Spears and Justin Timberlake (or ludicris and 50-cent or something) then obviously you are less likely to be into either RH or SP. So yeah, most of the people who dislike one will also dislike the other.

But I think we're mostly talking about people who listen to at least a little indie. Some of those people think RH sucks.

However, this thread has been an eye-opener to me in that apparently way more RH fans than I realized aren't completely obnoxious twits with terrible taste. Early on in the thread I said (and I think mostly believed) that you could discern someone as having bad taste in music if they were a fan of RH. I no longer think that.

I like all three of those bands you mentioned as well as noise and fuzzy and raw in general. I think OKC is lousy. I'm willing to give it yet ANOTHER try though.

That's pretty close to how I feel. I like 4 or 5 of their songs a lot. But the majority of them are so insufferably indulgent, hearing them makes me want to blow my brains out with a gun.

ya, im not the biggest fan of radio head, but I agree their music has really "progressed". They are a band from my time, and so I have listened to all their albums. Their style has changed over time, just like pink floyd's did. I'm not disputing that. I mean that's one of the reasons I hate weezer's new stuff is: it sound similar to old stuff, only way worse.

I'm just saying pink floyd is crazy. IDK how to explain it, im not very good at writing.

When we talk about progression or w/e, I think all the best bands ITT do it:

Radio Head
U2
RHCP
Metallica
Green Day (to a lesser extent).

Now, some of the later stuff is not crazy good. I would argue that Metallica's modern stuff blows. While RHCP's Stadium Arcadium was, considered by most (not me lol), excellent.

So you gotta have a balance of a changing sound that maintains an appeal. I think Radio Head, U2, RHCP and Greenday all have done that to their best abilities. So I would lits those 4 in my top 5, even though I only love RHCP.

Finally, in the Top 5, I would prolly put Nirvana. They are penalized b/c they are no longer around and have a style that might not appeal to everyone imo, but their music is still relevant. I hear Nirvana-like stuff in many songs, from RH to Queens of the Stone Age. A reason Paranoid Android is my favorite RH song is prolly b/c it has similar yet distinguishable (tamer) sounds to Nirvana. I assume if many of these great modern bands were asked about nirvana, they would say "influenced us, amazing band, ldo".

So for me, the best popular/modern/alternative rock of my time:

1. Nirvana
2. Radio Head
3. RHCP
4. U2
5. Green Day

I think this is a fair list. Though greenday doesn't look like it belongs there for some reason. But all these bands give me epic images of power, success and skill. So I guess Green Day stays.

All the modest mouse, Deathcab fans: these bands have not been relevant enough for me to include in discussion. Even though MM been around for a while, I think it suffers from an indie sound, which usually dosn't appeal to wide audiences.

Though, I would include those bands in a more "modern" era, one that includes: Muse, Linkin Park, etc...

I'd like to see someone post what they actually like about this album, preferably without using the words "amazing", "innovative", "technically difficult", or any of their synonyms. Actually describe what qualities of the music appeal to you.

Nirvana had 3 studio albums. you can say that all 3 were great, but it doesn't compare favorably to Radioheads 2 landmark albums + 4 others that were each among the best produced that year. plus Pablo Honey. and they are still recording

longevity counts

Radiohead sees the human experience as something painful, intricate, and weird enough to demand musical risks. That's why I love them.

Most pop/rock music derives from the extremes of emotion. Great pain or great passion. But is that actually much of life? No. Life's full story is only told by how days become weeks and months and years and obituaries. In that text, madness lurks, amidst the etiquette and the lies, the banal kindness and cruelty, and the fear, fear, fear, fear before death.

Radiohead loves that story well. Indeed, they trust it's worth telling...a rare faith.
